My little girl loves to quarrel,

and my heart chirped and soared toward her.

    توقَّد في عَينها الحبُّ نارا

    I fell in love with her when she was fifteen;

love blazed like fire in her eye.

And on her face are drops of beauty

that turn to sparks upon every heart.

When eyes gaze upon her, she shows them

rose-red pomegranate blossoms on her cheek.

She chirps like a sparrow and flies

like a meadow butterfly that loves the greenery.

And from her dress her leg appears,

    slender—so I love short garments.

And on her face the blossoms say

to her beholder, “How precious the fruit!”

And on her wrists are two bracelets, fashioned

to take me captive; in captivity I love the bracelet.

    إذا برزت في الظلامِ أنارا

    And at her neck is a necklace of precious pearls;

when she appears in the darkness, it shines.

Her mother made it for her, and within it

is a cross that has guarded purity night and day,

fluttering on her breast like my heart

when she turns and shows me the blades of her gaze.

She walked on and saw me following her,

so she grew afraid and made to seek concealment.

So I said, “My life for you! Do not flee,

though I love the way you flee.”

Then she spoke thus, in a mellow voice:

“You came, fearing neither reproach nor shame?”

So I said, “I came to pray to your beauty,

and give my life for chastity and protect maidens.”
