الحبُّlove علَّمنيtaught me ماwhat لذَّةpleasure الأرقِsleeplessness
تحتَbeneath الغصونِthe branches التيthat تلتفُّare wrapped بالوَرقِin leaves
Love taught me what pleasure lies in sleeplessness,
Love taught me the bliss of sleeplessness
beneath the branches wrapped in leaves.
Beneath the branches intertwined with leaves
لاmay ... never آلفَbefriend النومُsleep أجفاناًeyelids علىduring سمرٍnighttime conversation
سَلask القلوبَthe hearts منthrough الأفواهِthe mouths والحَدَقand the pupils
May sleep never befriend eyelids in nighttime conversation;
I cannot close my eyelids in slumber
ask the hearts through mouths and eyes.
While hearts question mouths and eyes
ياoh حبَّذاhow lovely ليلةٌa night أرخَتlowered ستائرهاits curtains
علىover المنازلِthe dwellings والجنَّاتِand the gardens والطُّرُقand the roads
Oh, how lovely was the night that drew its curtains
How lovely a night that drew its curtains
over the dwellings, the gardens, and the roads.
Over homes, gardens, and roads
كنَّاwe were نبوحُwe spoke openly بأسرارٍof secrets وتَكتُمُهاand it concealed them
ونحنُwhile we فيin الروضِthe garden كالنجمينِlike two stars فيon الأُفقthe horizon
We confided secrets, and the night concealed them,
We confided our secrets but kept them hidden
while we were in the garden, like two stars on the horizon.
While we were in the garden like two stars in the sky
وللنَّسيمand the breeze had علىamong الأغصانِthe branches هَينَمَةٌa whisper
وهيand it was التحيَّةُthe greeting بالأزهارِwith flowers والعبقand fragrance
And the breeze whispered among the branches,
And the breeze strokes the branches gently
and it was a greeting of flowers and fragrance.
Which is the greeting of flowers and fragrance

Her hands played with my hair a while, and my hand
Her hands toyed with my hair for a while and my hands
played with her ring, her necklace, and her earrings,
Fiddled with her ring, necklace, and earring
حتىuntil اعتَنَقناwe embraced فأغضَتthen she lowered طَرفهاher gaze خَجَلاًin shyness
منbefore النجومِthe stars التيthat ترنوgaze منfrom الغَسَقِthe dusk
until we embraced; then she lowered her gaze in shyness
Until we embraced and she lowered her gaze shyly
before the stars that gazed out of the dusk.
From the stars peering through the dusk

She kept embracing me until she closed
My embrace remained until she closed
her eyelids in drowsiness and fell asleep upon my neck.
Her eyelids and fell asleep on my shoulder

So I spent the night holding my breath and inhaling from
So I stayed still, holding my breath, bursting
her breath, soothing the unease within me.
From her breaths a home free of anxiety
ماhow كانwas أسعدَنيmade me happy فيin ضمِّهاembracing her أبداًforever
بينَbetween الذراعينِthe two arms لولاbut for طلعةُthe appearance of الفلقdawn
How happy I would have been to hold her forever
Nothing made me happier in her embrace
within my arms, but for the coming of dawn!
Between arms except the rise of dawn
فقمتso I rose أسحبُI trail أذيالاًhems مبلَّلةًdampened
منwith النّدىdew ومُوَشَّاةًand embroidered مِنَwith الشَّفَقtwilight's glow
So I rose, trailing hems dampened
So I rose, pulling trails damp with dew
with dew and embroidered with twilight's glow.
And tinted by the afterglow

And I said: O sleepers, I pity you!
And said: O you sleepers, have mercy
Why did you not fall in love and taste the pleasure of sleeplessness?
Won't you fall in love and taste the bliss of sleeplessness
