Love has gone—how wretched is the young man

Over bliss that time has folded away.

It soothed the soul with hopes, yet

Was nothing but dreams of sleep.

It vanished like light, yet I still

Remember it; remembrance is one of my two sorrows.

I bartered love for glory; after that,

My peace slipped from my palm.

When I shattered my love, hoping

To find myself freed from May's captivity,

    فأنا الكاسِرُ قلبي بيَدَي

    With it I shattered a heart that held it;

So I break my heart with my own two hands.

How often I carry it to sacrifice,

And see it bleeding within my breast.

Ah, alas for my love, and oh,

How long my yearning since the days of the sanctuary!

Never again shall I see her and she see me smiling,

While I am a little boy in love's infatuation.

Would that the east wind's breaths revived youth,

And greeted one dead within a living body.

Unknowing, I left a quarter peopled

With my loved ones, and found no solace with anyone living.

    وإذا ما لاحَ طيفُ الحُسنِ حَي

    So come now, let us weep for the past;

And whenever beauty's phantom appears, greet it.

Yet you see me content with the smallest thing.

Then became the worst of enemies in causing harm!

And many a maiden disowned me after

She had turned toward me with smiling lips.

Such is the world: no sincerity from

Its people can be hoped for; thinking well of them is folly.

Be a companion to me, gentle with me, for

One unhappy man's kindness to another has stirred my longing.

    حَولنا والوطرُ الأعلى لدَي

    نحنُ عشّاقُ جمالٍ وعُلي

    Tell brothers of pure friendship: 'Come;

We are lovers of beauty and glory.'

Our souls despised our bodily forms,

So we mocked calamities and death.

And we aspired to immortality; then

Our lot became misery, and our bliss was enough.

Indeed, in pride we abandoned the transient,

And followed what endures among humankind.

When you set my verses to music, they began

To draw the heavenly assembly toward me.

Between portraiture and melody I see

The joy of eternity and the pleasures of love.

May good be yours for what you have given me

Of captivating beauty or a plaintive melody.

    مِنه مَتِّع نظري أو مِسمَعي

    In your two hands, art's secret stands revealed;

With it, delight my sight or my hearing.

Painting and composition are yours, while I have

Song; art is one of my two kinships.

The two souls are sisters only through

The kinship of love; so I call you my dear brother.
