علىin جزعٍanguish أرومُI seek ولاand not أحوزُI attain
فإنso if أسأَلْI ask تقُلshe says ذاthis لاnot يجوزُis permitted
In anguish I seek, but do not attain.
I bear my longing in silence, not daring to ask,
So if I ask, she says, 'This is not permitted.'
For if I do, the answer comes, "This may not be."

وقيصرُand Caesar فيin هواهاlove for her والعزيزand al-Aziz
My tormentress is an amorous woman; Khosrow was humbled,
My tormentor is an Arab girl, lovelier than a houri,
as were Caesar and al-Aziz, through love for her.
While Caesar and the Khalif are her willing slaves.
شكوتُI complained لهاto her الهوىlove يوماًone day فقالتso she said
بماwith what ترجوهُyou hope for it منّاfrom us لاnot تفوزyou attain
One day I complained to her of love, and she said,
I told her of my passion one day and she replied,
'You will not attain what you hope for from us.
"With such hopes, you can never my heart seize."
فدونَfor, before الدرعthe shift والمرطand the mantle الثريّاthe Pleiades
وتحتهماand beneath them both الذخائرthe treasures والكنوزand the hoards
For before the shift and mantle lie the Pleiades,
Beneath her coat of mail and her rich silken shift
and beneath them lie treasures and hoards.'
Lie treasures and riches untold.
فقلتso I said لهاto her أرىI see نَسبيmy lineage شفيعاًan intercessor

So I said to her, 'I see my lineage as an intercessor
I said, "My lineage pleads to you for me,
with you—and indeed it is a lineage that sets me apart.'
A noble line that sets me apart."

She said, 'Honor and purity have adorned us,
She said, "Our glory lies in modesty and purity
and an impregnable refuge has guarded our beauty.
That guards our beauty, keeps it for none but the worthy."

Do you seek union with an Arab woman,
Shall an Arab girl grant her love to me,
when Abarviz never attained this?'
When even the great Barawiz could not attain this prize?
