كوجهٍlike a face جميلٍbeautiful تحتَbeneath شعرٍhair مُسَدَّلِlet down
I strolled in a lush, dew-covered garden,
I strolled in a verdant garden, shaded,
Like a beautiful face beneath flowing hair.
Like a beautiful face beneath cascading hair.
وفوقَand above الهضابِthe hills الشّمسُthe sun تحكيresembles مليكةًa queen
أطلّتshe looked out علىupon العُشّاقthe lovers منfrom سجفِa curtain مخملvelvet
And above the hills, the sun resembled a queen
Above the hills the sun told of a queen
Who looked out upon lovers from behind a velvet curtain.
Who peered at lovers from a velvet lattice.
فمالَthen swayed جنانيmy heart ذاكراًremembering مُتشوّقاًyearning
كماas مالتِbent الأزهارُthe flowers منfrom لمسthe touch of أنمُلfingertips
Then my heart swayed, remembering and yearning,
My soul inclined there, remembering, yearning,
As flowers bent at the touch of fingertips.
As flowers tilt when brushed by a beetle.
علىon العشبِthe grass أبصرتُI saw الحبيبةَthe beloved صدفةًby chance
وفيand in يدِهاher hand البيضاءwhite زهرُblossoms القرُنفُلthe carnation
On the grass, I saw my beloved by chance,
On the grass I chanced to see my beloved,
And in her white hand were carnation blossoms.
In her white hand a sprig of carnation.
فقالتthen she said وقدand already مالتshe leaned إليَّtoward me ببسمَةٍwith a smile
هوit الزهرُthe flowers فانشُقso inhale وانتعِشand be refreshed وتعلّلand take solace
Then she said, leaning toward me with a smile:
She turned to me with a smile
Here are the flowers—breathe their scent, be refreshed, and take solace.
And said, “Here is a flower, so open up and revive and be happy.”
فقلتُthen I said لهاto her إنindeed القرُنفُلَthe carnation زهرَةٌa flower
تلوحُgleams علىupon رأسِthe head of الملاكthe angel المُكلَّلcrowned
Then I told her: The carnation is a flower
I said to her, “The carnation is a blossom
That gleams upon the crowned angel’s head.
That blooms on the head of a crowned angel.
وحواءُand Eve فيin الجنّاتِthe gardens كانتshe used to تشُمُّهاsmell it
وتحفظُهاand guard it حفظَsafeguarding الجوَاهِرِthe gems والحليand jewelry
And Eve, in the gardens, used to breathe its scent,
Eve in the gardens would breathe its scent
And guard it as one guards gems and jewelry.
And guard it like gems and jewelry.

The fragrance of love and solace perfumes her heart;
The perfume of love and joy fills her heart,
For with a whiff of it, melancholy lifts.
And in one whiff melancholy departs.
أيحظىwill he enjoy? بِشَمِّwith smelling الزَّهرِthe flowers خداًa cheek وباقةًand a bouquet
مُحِبٌّa lover يُعانيsuffers مطمعاًa desire بعدafter مأملa hope
Will the flowers’ scent, in cheek and bouquet, be enjoyed
What cheek gets to smell the flower’s scent,
By a lover tormented by desire after hope?
What lover suffers in hope after torment?
بإضمامةِin a bouquet جاءcame القُرنفلُthe carnation خاضعاًbowing
وفيand in راحةa palm بيضاءَwhite راحةُrelief مُثقَلone weighed down
The carnation came bowing in a bouquet,
The carnation came humble
And in a white palm lies relief for one weighed down.
In her clasp, a burdened white palm.
دعيهاleave it لِشاكٍfor a sufferer أوor ضعيهاplace it لِناحلٍfor one wasting away
فخَصرُكِfor your waist مهماhowever much ينضرgrows fresh الزّهرُthe flowers يذبُلwithers
Leave it for a sufferer, or give it to one wasting away;
Leave it for one who pines, or place it for a bee,
For your waist withers, however fresh the flowers grow.
For your waist, however fresh the blossom, will wither.”
