I stood at the beloved’s grave, offering a greeting.

Then a bird upon it stirred me as it sang.

So I said to it, “Are you mocking death,

when I have come to kneel, weeping and praying for mercy?

You sing while I weep, O bird; take heed

of an abode of stillness, over which sorrow has pitched its tent.”

Then it answered me, “This is a passerby’s greeting

that stirs branches, a grave, and bones.

This weeping of yours was sincerity and mercy,

and my singing was a smile of consolation.”
