وخَلفيand behind me أرىI see عقداًa necklace منof النورِlight وهّاجاblazing
I see the sea before me, hurling waves.
I see the sea before me hurling waves,
And behind me I see a blazing necklace of light.
And behind me I see a blazing necklace of light.
فماfor ... is not البحرُthe sea إلاbut النفسُthe soul تطربُis thrilled للعُلىby lofty heights
وماand ... is not النورُthe light إِلاbut الفكرُthought يطلبُseeks إفراجاrelease
For the sea is nothing but the soul, transported by knowledge;
For the sea is but the soul, thrilled by lofty heights,
and the light is nothing but thought, seeking release.
And the light is but thought, seeking release.
أحنُّI yearn الىfor الحمراءَthe Alhambra صبّاًa lovesick lover مؤرقّاًsleepless
فأخرجُso I bring forth منfrom قلبيmy heart القصائدَthe poems إخراجاa bringing forth
I yearn for the Alhambra—lovesick and robbed of sleep—
I yearn for the Alhambra, a sleepless lover,
and bring forth the poems from my heart in an outpouring,
So I pour the poems forth from my heart,
كماjust as حنّyearned مقصوصُclipped الجنّاحِthe wing وقدand had رأىseen
طيوراًbirds إِلىto الأوكارِthe nests ترجعُreturn أفواجاin flocks
as a clipped-winged bird yearns when it sees
Just as a clipped-wing bird yearned, having seen
birds returning to their nests in flocks.
Birds returning to their nests in flocks.
ويُوحِشُنيand makes me lonely طَيفُthe phantom القنوطِdespair إذاwhen سَرىpasses by night
فيؤنسنيthen comforts me طيفُthe phantom الجمالِbeauty إذاwhen ناجىwhispers intimately
The specter of despair makes me desolate when it steals through the night,
And the phantom of despair makes me lonely when it passes by night,
but the vision of beauty comforts me when it whispers to me.
Then the phantom of beauty comforts me when it whispers.
