رأيتُI saw زَهرflowers النّوىexile نضيراfresh
فهيّجso it stirred الحزنَsorrow لاnot السّرُوراjoy
I saw the flowers of exile in fresh bloom,
I saw the flowers of Nawaa blossoming,
so they stirred sorrow, not joy.
Bringing sorrow, not joy to me.
أهوىI love نَضيراًfresh blossoms منamong زَهرِthe flowers of أرضيmy land
وفيand in النّوىexile أكرَهُI hate النضيراfresh blossoms
I love the fresh blossoms of my land,
I loved the blooms of my land,
and in exile I hate fresh blossoms.
Yet hated their peers in Nawaa.
فطالماfor often هاجَstirred ذكرُthe memory of ماضٍa bygone time
أنشقُI breathe in مِنfrom عَهدِهِits days العَبيراthe fragrance
For often the memory of the past has stirred me;
Long has the memory of the past
I breathe in the fragrance of its days.
Flooded me with sweet fragrance.
أزهارُthe flowers of أرضيَmy land كانwas شَذاهاtheir fragrance
يَملأfills قَلبيmy heart الفتىyouthful حُبوراwith joy
The flowers of my land—their fragrance once
My homeland’s blooms filled my heart
filled my youthful heart with joy.
In youth with tender passions.
ولونُهاand their color كانَwas لونthe color of نَفسيmy soul
أيّامَin the days when كانَwas النَّدىdew نَثيراstrewn
And their color was the color of my soul,
Their hues matched my very soul
in the days when dew lay strewn.
In days when dew was plentiful.
والحزنُand sorrow والهمُّand worry أذبلاهاboth withered it
وكمand how much أرَتهاshowed it النّوىexile سُروراjoy
And sorrow and worry withered it,
But grief and cares have faded them;
and how much joy exile has shown it!
While Nawaa’s blooms stayed beautiful.
فأصبَحتso it became لاnot تُحبُّit loves نَضراًanything fresh
ولاnor ابتساماًa smile لاnor ثُغوراlips
So it came to love nothing fresh,
No more do they love verdure now,
nor smiles, nor lips.
Or smiles, however bright they glow.
فذُوfor one afflicted with الضّنىwasting illness يحسدُenvies المُعافىthe healthy
وذوand one afflicted with العَمىblindness يحسدُenvies البَصيراthe sighted
For the ailing envy the healthy,
To sufferers, the fortunate seem mean;
and the blind envy those who see.
The blind envy the sighted’s vision clear.
لمّاwhen ذَوىwithered الزَّهرُthe flowers فيin فؤاديmy heart
كَرِهتُI loathed فيin الرَّوضِthe garden أنto أسيراI walk
When the flowers in my heart withered,
Since the blooms withered in my heart,
I loathed walking in the garden.
I shun to walk where flowers grow.
فقدتُI lost شِعْرِيmy poetry وكادَand nearly قَلبيmy heart
يَفقُدُloses مِنfrom يأسِهِits despair الشعوراfeeling
I lost my poetry, and my heart almost
I’ve lost my poetry; my heart itself
lost all feeling in its despair.
Nearly lost all sense of joy.
تَشتاقُlongs for عَينيmy eye دَمعيmy tears وحزنيand my sorrow
يُغريurges دُموعيmy tears بأنto تغُوراthey recede
My eye longs for my tears, and my sorrow
My eyes long for my tears, my grief;
urges my tears to recede.
My tears are tempted forth to flow.
الطلُّdew يُنميnurtures غصناًa branch رطيباًtender
والغَيثُand rain لاnot يُنضِرُmakes flourish الكَسيراthe broken one
Dew nurtures a tender branch,
The rain makes not the broken bough
and rain does not make a broken one flourish.
Turn green again, but sun can do.
الحكمةُwisdom اليومَtoday أدّبتنيdisciplined me
فَصرتُso I became منfrom ضربهاits blows كَبيراold
Wisdom has disciplined me today,
Today stern wisdom tutored me;
so I have grown old from its blows.
I’ve grown mature from its decree.
وسِرتُand I journeyed فيin عالمِthe world of البَلاياafflictions
وغُربَتيand my exile أقطعُI pass الشّهوراthe months
And I journeyed through a world of afflictions,
I’ve wandered in a world of woes
and in my exile I passed the months,
With exile cutting through my years.
حتّىuntil رأيتُI saw الربيعَspring يُهديoffers
إِلىto الوَرَىhumankind زَهرَهُits flowers الكثيراabundant
until I saw spring offering
Till I saw how spring sent as gift
its abundant flowers to humankind.
To mortals blossoms far and near.
فبتُّso I began أشريI buy فيin السّوقِthe market زَهراًflowers
مثليlike me غَداbecame عُمرُهُits lifespan قصيراshort
So I took to buying flowers in the market,
Then in the market I resolved to buy
whose life, like mine, had grown short.
Flowers, though brief their span, like mine.
وكنتُand I used to أهوَىlove أنto أَجتَنيهِpluck it
وماand not اجتِنائيmy plucking لهُof it يَسيراeasy
And I had wished to pluck them,
I wished to pluck them, yet reflected -
but plucking them was not easy for me.
Plucking them is no great design.
فقلتُso I said ياO قَلبُheart شمَّsmell هذاthis
لاno بدَّescape يوماًone day مِنfrom أنthat تَطيراyou fly
So I said, “O heart, smell this;
I said: O heart, just smell this bloom,
one day you must fly away.
One day you surely will take flight!
ماnot زلتَyou have ceased بعدَafter انحِجابِthe veiling of عدنٍEden
تَذكُرُyou remember مِنهاfrom it شذاًfragrance ونُوراand light
After Eden was veiled, you still
Since the loss of blissful Eden
remember its fragrance and light.”
You still recall its scents and light.
