I saw people in their swift advance,

Measuring the old against the new.

    فأقصِر ما استطعتَ عن الحديث

    For if you speak to them of goodness, they grow bored;

So refrain from talk as much as you can.

For bleating never turned back a wolf's fangs,

Nor did the fat show restraint toward the lean.

So take them as they came and as they wished,

And do not hope to renew what is threadbare.

    فَخَف من ذلكَ الداءِ اللبيث

    Indeed, they have neared death and baffled every skilled physician;

    So fear that lingering disease.

And corruption born of them tasted sweet to them,

Like venom spat from their speckled serpents.

So aid from you brings no benefit,

And in your affliction you have no rescuer.

Upon an apple eaten in wickedness

And lewdness falls the inheriting child's curse.

May it never have existed, nor any of them!

And this progeny comes from Lot and Seth.

And how can fruit from a branch be sweet,

When that branch comes from a corrupt root?

Is it through apples that people perish

And drown in flame and in downpours?

And a fig is forbidden, while havoc is permitted

    In gardens of tainted trees.

May the wombs of evil bear no offspring,

Nor milk flow from the nursing mother.

Most of people's marriages are debauchery,

So do not marvel at offspring like feeble fools.

    And watch, unconcerned, oppressors,

Defiant men who laugh at the afflicted.

And walk alone on easy ground, at peace,

For deadly perils lie on treacherous sands.

And do not heed shouting or wailing,

For many a rescuer has suffered through someone seeking aid.

    فكن بين الحميرِ من الليوث

    I saw people as lions or donkeys;

So be one of the lions among the donkeys.
