أُعاتِبُهاI reproach her والحبُّand love منof طبعهِits nature العتبُreproach
وفيand in مُقلتيmy eye غيظٌanger وفيand in مُهجتيmy heart حبُّlove
I reproach her, and reproach is in love's nature.
I reproach her, though reproach is of love's nature,
And in my eye is anger, and in my heart is love.
In my eyes there is anger, in my heart there is love.
وأُسمِعُهاand I make her hear ماthat which يجرحُwounds السَّمعَthe ear لفظُهُits utterance
فَترضىso she is pleased بمغزاهُwith its intent ويَشفَعُand intercedes ليfor me القلبُthe heart
And I make her hear words whose utterance wounds the ear.
I let her hear what wounds the ear by its words,
So she is pleased with their intent, and the heart intercedes for me.
So she accepts its meaning and my heart intercedes for me.
سلاميmy greeting عَليهاto her بسمةٌa smile ثمthen قبلةٌa kiss
كذلكlikewise حيّاgreeted الزهرَthe flowers دَمعُtears النَّدىthe dew العذبsweet
My greeting to her is a smile, then a kiss.
My greeting to her is a smile then a kiss,
So, too, the tears of sweet dew greeted the flowers.
Just so fresh dew weeps onto the flowers.
معwith النورِthe light والأنسامِand the breezes روحيmy soul تزورُهاvisits her
وفيand in روحِهاher soul الأزهارُthe flowers والماءُand the water والعشبand the grass
With the light and the breezes, my soul visits her.
With light and breeze my soul visits her,
And in her soul are flowers, water, and grass.
And in her soul are flowers, water, and grass.
فتجنيso it gathers الذيthat which تجنيهgathers it فيin الرَّوضِthe garden نحلةٌa bee
وماand not الشعرُpoetry إِلاexcept الشَّهدُhoney in the comb يخزنُهstores it الصبُّthe ardent lover
So it gathers what a bee gathers in the garden.
She reaps what bees reap in the meadow,
And poetry is nothing but honey that the ardent lover stores.
For poetry is but the honey stored by passion.
