I remembered what time had worn away and what it had changed.
I recalled what time had worn away and changed,
So I told myself, "Your greatest desire has eluded you."
So I said to myself: The prime of your life has passed.

My sword broke in the struggle - how often
A sword has shattered in the boldest hero's hand.
A sword breaks in the hand of the boldest hero.

After my ambitions, I shook my hand free, content;
After ambitions, I shook my hand contented.
How small the world is to me, and how contemptible!
How small is this world to me now, how paltry!

Between wealth and poverty I laugh while weeping,
Between wealth and poverty I laugh weeping,
And weep while laughing, as weak birds have become eagles.
And weep laughing, while the owl takes its ease.

Many a passing attribute perishes, while the essence remains.
So many goods that fade while the essence remains.

How many a wealthy man, his poverty is in his left hand,
And many a poor man has grown rich through noble deeds.
And how many a poor man, generous in his virtues.

So I came to see the wealthiest, for all his greed, as the poorest.
So I see the wealthy, despite their greed, the poorest.

You are like that, O world, one who is drowning and thirsty,
The needy suffer, while the prosperous grow insolent.
So one in need suffers, and one in bounty is wasteful.

While a fool desires and gambles and drinks himself insensible!

Pampered, walking on carpets and marble!

And a piece of bread is harder to gain by stealth
Than a great fortune—so be a more skillful thief.
Than great riches - so be a more skillful thief!

But a secret that has baffled our minds.

And let us not be evil to gain spoils or victory.
And are not evildoers merely to profit or win.

For the universe is sustained by the yellow metal.
For the world's composition is not of yellow metal.

Within us is constant struggle of good and evil,
And the idea of good keeps losing through our weakness.
And the thought of good continues losing from our weakness.

One ignorant man turned a blind eye; another, envious, denied them.
So that some ignorant pretended not to see, some envious denied.

We are not companions in life - rather,
I suffered captivity among them, and death would shelter me better.
I have been afflicted by fetters between them, and misery made secret.

For nothing was more precious to me, nothing harder.

And I shall indeed forget all that embittered my life,
For I have embittered some whose life I made bitter.

A stranger in love and home, the most precious is the rarest.
A stranger in passion and home - the most precious is the rarest.

Those nights in nights of sorrow are remembered.

And the tear of passion is scattered, and the tear of dew sprayed.

At a gang of dwarfs - it went astray and became arrogant.

When it overturned his heart and senses!

For the living are naught but dead buried in the gloom.
