I loved my sword as I loved the brow,

and felt the blows of both.

So I learned that the sword's blow is gentler

than that of a brow that conquered the valiant conqueror.

So when I open my heart, I see a brow,

and when I open my robe, I see a keen blade.

And thus a man of honor and valor

spends his life courting and fighting.

At times he defends the homeland, and at others

with his sword he guards the maiden with budding breasts.

    To the noblest, glory is the brother of love;

whoever does not love dies sorrowful and unfulfilled.

Alas for a heart that never

knew, even once, a false promise of love!

Misery has toyed with it; is there any rest

for a youth you see as a companion to the virtues?

My soul melts for a maiden whose mouth

is hail I see melting every day.

Its smiles are to our hearts as a cloud is

to our crops, rippling in battalions.

And as a breeze plays with the garden's blossoms,

her smiling mouth has never ceased playing with my heart.

And indeed I played with her necklace, as though I

had grasped the Pleiades and the piercing meteor.

And in her chamber I smelled the lily of her throat,

so I turned away from the garden's flowers.

    That throat which I kissed

is a treasure of happiness for me, and I was the plunderer.

When I stretched my hand toward it like a thief,

I pushed the darkness back from certainty's dawn.

And I drew it back, and brought my breath back to

my chest, to halt my fleeing heart within it.
