نظَمتُ أرقَّ الشّعرِ عفواً وأترابي

نظَمتُ أرقَّ الشّعرِ عفواً وأترابي

يَسيرونُ عَدواً مُولعين بألعابِ

يَسيرونُ عَدواً مُولعين بألعابِ

I composed the most delicate verse spontaneously, while my peers

I effortlessly composed the most eloquent poetry, while my peers

were running about, engrossed in games.

Rushed ahead absorbed in play.

وما كانَ لي إلا ثلاثٌ وعشرةٌ

وما كانَ لي إلا ثلاثٌ وعشرةٌ

من العمرِ لما صرتُ خلّابَ ألباب

من العمرِ لما صرتُ خلّابَ ألباب

And I was only thirteen

I was but thirteen years old

years old when I became an enchanter of minds.

When I became the voice of reason.

أنا وردةٌ قد نوَّرت قبلَ حينها

أنا وردةٌ قد نوَّرت قبلَ حينها

فشَوكي لأعدائي وعطري لأحبابي

فشَوكي لأعدائي وعطري لأحبابي

I am a rose that has bloomed before its time;

I am a rose that bloomed before its time.

so my thorns are for my enemies, and my fragrance for my loved ones.

My thorns for enemies, my scent for loved ones.

إذا قيلَ شعرٌ نلتُ إكليلَ آسه

إذا قيلَ شعرٌ نلتُ إكليلَ آسه

وإن قيلَ نَثرٌ كنتُ سيِّدَ كتّاب

وإن قيلَ نَثرٌ كنتُ سيِّدَ كتّاب

When poetry is mentioned, I win its myrtle wreath;

If it is said "poetry," I am crowned laureate.

and if prose is mentioned, I am the master of writers.

If it is said "prose," I am the master writer.
