وجَفنيand my eyelid منfrom السّهدِsleeplessness الطويلِlong قريحاsore
I always see my bold heart wounded,
My bold heart I see forever wounded,
and my eyelid sore from long sleeplessness.
And my eyelids victim of prolonged insomnia.
وأهواءُand the passions نفسيof my soul عندَat ثورَتِهاtheir upheaval لهاthey have
تلاعبُfrolicking حيّاتٍof serpents تفحُّhiss فحيحاa hissing sound
And my soul's passions, when they rage, have
My soul's desires when in revolt
the play of serpents letting out a hiss.
Are snakes playing, hissing maliciously.
فكمso many a ليلةٍnight أَشقىI suffer بهاthrough it وتروعُنيand it terrifies me
كأنَّas though عليهاupon it مُدنفاًsomeone gravely ill وجريحاand wounded
So many a night I suffer through, and it terrifies me,
So many nights have I suffered miserably,
as though someone gravely ill and wounded lay upon it.
As if over them an afflicted one moaned.
وفيand in حمرةٍredness أوor صفرةٍyellowness منof نجُومِهاits stars
مطامعُdesires مِنهاfrom them قدalready غدَوتُI have become طريحاlaid low
And in the redness or yellowness of its stars
In their redness or yellowness of stars
are desires that have laid me low.
Are desires that have left me stricken.
وكمand how often يُذبلُwithers القنديلُthe lamp وَجهيmy face وأرتميand I fling myself
علىupon ضوئهِits light حتىuntil يصيرَit becomes شحيحاstingy
And how often the lamp withers my face, and I fling myself
How my lamp withers my face as I hurl myself
upon its light until it grows stingy.
At its light until it flickers weakly.
وجفنايَand my two eyelids مربوطانِbound والنومُand sleep مطلقٌunbound
وليليand my night كحفّارٍlike a gravedigger يسدُّseals ضريحاa tomb
And my eyelids are bound, while sleep is unbound,
My eyes are fettered, while sleep is freed,
and my night is like a gravedigger sealing a tomb.
And my night like a digger sealing a tomb.
فأضربُso I strike قلبيmy heart ساحقاًcrushing لرجائهِof its hope
وألعَنُand I curse دَهراًan age لاnot يزالُceases to be قبيحاugly
So I strike my heart, crushing its hope,
So I crush my heart, destroying its hopes,
and curse an age that remains ugly.
And curse an age that remains forever wicked.
ويَضربُنيand strikes me طيفُthe phantom الدُّجىnight's darkness بجناحهِwith its wing
فأسكتُso I fall silent رعباًin terror تحتَهُbeneath it فيصيحاthen it cries out
And the phantom of darkness strikes me with its wing,
The specter of gloom hits me with its wings
so I fall silent in terror beneath it, and it cries out.
And I fall silent, terrified by its scream.
