For many a mate is without a mate or fledgling!

ودارُ الأهلِ موحشةٌ وفيها

ودارُ الأهلِ موحشةٌ وفيها

نفختُ فلم يكن في النار نفخي

نفختُ فلم يكن في النار نفخي

And the family home is desolate, and within it

I blew, yet it was not into the fire that I blew.

إلى عربيةٍ ظَعَنَت حنيني

إلى عربيةٍ ظَعَنَت حنيني

وبينَ رصافةٍ قلبي وكرخ

وبينَ رصافةٍ قلبي وكرخ

My longing is for an Arab woman who departed,

And my heart lies between Rusafa and Karkh.

ثوَت في أصهفانَ وفي بُخارى

ثوَت في أصهفانَ وفي بُخارى

وفي دِلهي وقرطبةِ وبلخ

وفي دِلهي وقرطبةِ وبلخ

She dwelt in Isfahan and in Bukhara,

And in Delhi, Cordoba, and Balkh.
