دَع للجهادِ قواعدَ الزجَّاجِ

دَع للجهادِ قواعدَ الزجَّاجِ

ودفاترَ الورَّاقِ والسرّاجِ

ودفاترَ الورَّاقِ والسرّاجِ

For jihad, leave aside al-Zajjaj’s rules,

For battle, set aside al-Zajjaj’s rules,

And the notebooks of al-Warraq and al-Sarraj.

علماؤنا كثروا وقلَّ كُماتُنا

علماؤنا كثروا وقلَّ كُماتُنا

فاليومَ حاجتُنا إلى الحجَّاج

فاليومَ حاجتُنا إلى الحجَّاج

Our scholars have multiplied, while our warriors have dwindled;

Our scholars have grown numerous, and our warriors few;

Today our need is for al-Hajjaj,

So today our need is for al-Hajjaj,

وإلى ابنِ ذي يزنٍ يطهِّرُ ملكَهُ

وإلى ابنِ ذي يزنٍ يطهِّرُ ملكَهُ

من وَطأةِ الأحباشِ والأعلاج

من وَطأةِ الأحباشِ والأعلاج

And for Ibn Dhi Yazan, to cleanse his realm

And for Ibn Dhi Yazan to cleanse his realm

From the crushing tread of Abyssinians and foreign interlopers;

Of the oppressive tread of the Abyssinians and the barbarians;

وإلى صلاحِ الدينِ تشهدُ بَطشَهُ

وإلى صلاحِ الدينِ تشهدُ بَطشَهُ

حطّينُ للتحريرِ والإفراج

حطّينُ للتحريرِ والإفراج

And for Saladin—to whose might bears witness

And for Salah al-Din, whose might is attested

Hattin—for liberation and deliverance.

تلكَ البوارجُ أقبلت وتبرَّجت

تلكَ البوارجُ أقبلت وتبرَّجت

في بحرنا أرسى من الأبراج

في بحرنا أرسى من الأبراج

Those warships have drawn near and flaunted themselves,

Those battleships have approached and flaunted their finery,

In our sea, anchored more firmly than towers.

In our sea, more firmly anchored than towers.

بُلدانُنا وثغورُنا أهدافُها

بُلدانُنا وثغورُنا أهدافُها

إن لم نقابلها على الأمواج

إن لم نقابلها على الأمواج

Our lands and frontier strongholds are their targets,

Our lands and our ports are their targets,

Unless we confront them upon the waves.

If we do not confront them upon the waves.

أربى على كلِّ السفينِ سفينُنا

أربى على كلِّ السفينِ سفينُنا

واليومَ أصبَحنا بلا مِزلاج

واليومَ أصبَحنا بلا مِزلاج

Our fleet once surpassed every fleet,

Our ships outstripped all other ships,

And today we are left without even a bolt.

And today we are without a skiff.
