Even if one day my poetic gift withers like flowers,

and my lifeblood is consumed by so much love,

I shall have fragrance and light from both, for I

have poured them both out for the good of my kin and my nation.

Many hearts in the world will beat

for my heart, and tears will flow after mine.

I run my fingertips over my old wound,

and collapse from its agonies like one dead.

And I walk sorrowful, fearful, hesitant,

upon the ruins of bliss and the grave of youth.

The caravan wept around me the day they bade their families farewell,

yet the tears of loved ones did not stir my grief.

Nor did my eye yield its most precious drop,

for parting from my mother had dried my tears.

I see the heart, amid worry and sorrow, closed

to light and birdsong, beauty and greenery.

It has hardened until gentleness has become cruelty,

and grown barren until it is weary of all freshness.

How, then, can I cure its sickness with beauty,

when it has no share of bliss or pleasure?

And if it is open to comfort and joy,

the world appears to it in its fairest form.

The heart is a mirror for every image

that appears, whether in clarity or cloudiness.

    كذلكَ أحلامُ الشّبابِ اضمَحلَّت

    Gone is the time when love soothed me;

so too have the dreams of youth faded away.

There is no return for them amid humiliation and separation,

which humbles souls never meant for humiliation.

Yet I have the favor of the muse of poetry,

so I find solace in a wreath that adorns my brow.

And she has given my eyes some of her beauty,

and has been my intercessor with every lovely woman.

And I am of the Arabs, whose swords

and pens were the stars of creation.

So my reed pen's strokes are like the blows of their blades,

and my poem's verse stands above the nobles' battle cry.

You may take pride in me—I am your brother—so vie in pride,

then, with sisters who take pride in their brothers.
