أيوحشُكِdoes it make you lonely الملهىthe place of revelry ويؤنِسُكِand it comforts you الرَّمسُthe grave
غريبةُa stranger دارٍan abode أنتِyou أيتهاO النفسُthe soul
Does diversion make you lonely, while the grave gives you companionship?
Does the place of revelry make you lonely, while the grave comforts you?
A stranger to every dwelling are you, O soul.
You are a stranger to your dwelling, O soul.
أتيتِyou came إلىto الدُّنياthe world علىwith غيرِno أهبةٍpreparation
ولمand did not ترجعيyou return إلاexcept كماjust as انقلَعَwas torn out الضرسthe molar
You came into the world wholly unprepared,
You came into the world without preparation,
And you return only as a tooth is wrenched out.
And you returned only as a molar is torn out.
فحيَّرنيso it bewildered me منكِfrom you التراوحُwavering فيin الهوىdesire
وأنتِand you علىin a state of شكٍّdoubt يطولُgrows long بهِthrough it الهجسbrooding
Your wavering amid desire has bewildered me,
So your wavering in desire has bewildered me,
While you remain in doubt, your brooding drawn out.
While you dwell in doubt that prolongs your brooding.
فلاso no منزلٌdwelling ترضينَهُyou are pleased with it بعدafter منزلٍa dwelling
قريبٍnear بعيدٍfar عنكِfrom you مأتمُهُits funeral عرسa wedding feast
No dwelling pleases you, one after another—
So no dwelling satisfies you, dwelling after dwelling,
Near yet far from you, its mourning is a wedding.
Near yet far from you, its funeral a wedding feast.
ولمand did not تذكُريyou remember ماwhat قبلُcame before منof طولِlength of غربةٍexile
ولمand did not تعلميyou know ماwhat بعدُcomes after فاقتادكِso it led you اللبسconfusion
You never recalled what came before, after so long an estrangement,
Nor did you remember the long exile that came before,
Nor learned what comes after; confusion led you on.
Nor did you know what comes after, so confusion led you.
تعَسَّفتِyou wandered blindly فيin ليلٍa night منof الشكِّdoubt دامسٍpitch-dark
ولاand no بدَّescape منfrom أنthat يطلعَrises الصبحُthe dawn والشمسand the sun
You blundered through a pitch-dark night of doubt,
You wandered blindly in a pitch-dark night of doubt,
Yet dawn and sunlight cannot but arise.
And dawn and the sun must rise.
تقولينَyou say ليto me ماnot الأرضُthe earth دارُa home إقامةٍresidence
ولكنand yet داريmy home تلكَthat one وحشتهاits loneliness أُنسsolace
You tell me, “Earth is no abiding home;
You tell me: ‘The earth is no abiding home,
That other home is mine—its desolation is companionship.”
But my home is that one, whose loneliness is solace.
سأرحلُI shall depart عنfrom جسمٍa body أناI منهُfrom it كالشَّذاlike fragrance
منfrom الزهرthe flowers يَبقىremains بعدَafter أنthat يذبُلَwithers الغَرسthe plant
I shall depart a body in which I am like fragrance
I shall leave a body; I am to it as fragrance
From a flower, lingering after the plant has withered.
From flowers, lingering after the plant withers.’
رحيلُكِyour departure هذاthis هَجعَةٌa slumber أبديةٌeternal
أمor اليقظةُthe awakening الكُبرىgreat التيwhich بَدؤهاits beginning الرمسthe grave
Is this departure of yours an everlasting sleep,
Is this departure of yours an eternal slumber,
Or the great awakening whose beginning is the grave?
Or the great awakening that begins with the grave?
أياO نفسُsoul أنتِyou السرُّthe mystery والسرُّand the mystery غامضٌobscure
كخطِّlike the script of كتابٍa book فوقَهُover it اندَلقَspilled النقسthe ink
O soul, you are the secret, and the secret is obscure,
O soul, you are the mystery, and the mystery is obscure,
Like writing on a page over which ink has spilled.
Like a book's script over which ink has spilled.
تردَّدتِyou wavered بينَbetween الخيرِgood والشرِّand evil فيin الهوىdesire
فمنكِso from you لكِfor you النُّعمىbliss ومنكِand from you لكِfor you البؤسmisery
You wavered between good and evil in your desire;
You wavered between good and evil in desire,
From you to yourself come blessing and misery.
So from you comes your bliss, and from you your misery.
وماand not كنتِyou were إلاexcept اثنينِtwo فيin جسمِa body واحدٍone
وهذاand this one لهit has قلبٌa heart وذاكَand that one لهit has رأسa head
You have only ever been two within a single body:
And you were nothing but two in a single body,
One has a heart, and the other has a head.
And this one has a heart, and that one a head.
أأنتِare you أناI أمor لستyou are not منيof me فإننيfor indeed I
أرىI see اثنينِtwo فيin جسميmy body حديثُهماtheir conversation هَمسa whisper
Are you myself, or are you not a part of me? For I
Are you me, or are you not of me? For I
See two within my body, their conversation a whisper.
See two in my body, their talk a whisper.
وبينهماand between them فيin الأمرِthe matter طالَgrew prolonged تحيُّريmy perplexity
فيدفعُنيso it drives me جرسٌa sound ويمنعنيand it restrains me جرسa sound
Between the two, my bewilderment has long endured:
And between them, in this matter, I have long been perplexed,
One bell urges me on, another holds me back.
So one sound drives me on, and another sound restrains me.
سلاحُهماtheir weapon ماضٍsharp وقاضٍand a judge هواهُماtheir desire
ولاand no درعَarmor ليfor me عندَduring العراكِthe struggle ولاand no ترسshield
Their weapon is keen, and their desire is their judge;
Their weapon is sharp, and their desire is the judge,
I have no armor when they clash, and no shield.
And I have no armor in the struggle, nor a shield.
أبعدَis it after الرَّدىdeath هلare أنتِyou ذاهبةٌgoing away سُدىin vain
كماjust as انهرَقتwas spilled خمرٌwine بهاwith it انكسَرَتshattered كأسa cup
After death, will you go away to no purpose,
After death, will you go to waste,
Like wine poured out when its cup is broken?
Like wine spilled when the cup that held it shattered?
فياso, oh حبّذاhow welcome هذاthis وقدand indeed قالَsaid هكذاthus
كثيرونmany لكنbut قولهمtheir words كلُّهall of it يأسdespair
How welcome that would be!—and so have spoken
So how welcome this would be! And thus have spoken
Many; yet all that they say is despair.
Many, but all their words are despair.
فعوديso return بإيمانٍwith faith يكنthere will be لكِfor you موطنٌa home
وإلاand otherwise انتهىends فيin الحفرةِthe pit السّthe (start of 'good fortune') عدُgood fortune (completion) والنحسand ill fortune
Return, then, in faith, and you shall have a homeland;
So return with faith, and you will have a home,
Otherwise, within the grave both fortune and misfortune end.
Otherwise, good fortune and ill fortune end in the pit.
ولاand no جنةٌparadise تُرجىis hoped for ولاand no نارُfire تُختشىis feared
فَأَنسَىso I forget وأُنسَىand I am forgotten والوجودُand existence هوitself التعسmisery
No paradise to hope for and no fire to fear—
And there is no paradise to hope for, nor fire to fear,
Then I forget and am forgotten, and existence lies in misery.
So I forget and am forgotten, and existence itself is misery.
أموتُI die وأحياand I live كلَّevery يومٍday أفيis it in الثَّرىthe earth
كماas فيin الكرَىsleep إنif غبتُI am gone فارقنىleaves me الحسُّsensation
I die and live each day—is it so beneath the earth,
I die and live each day; in the earth,
As in sleep, when I sink away and sense departs me?
As in sleep, if I am gone, will sensation leave me?
هنيئاًhow fortunate لمنfor whoever فيin القبرِthe grave يرقدُsleeps آمناًsecure
هنالِكَthere يَشفىis cured الداءُthe illness أوor يطهرُis cleansed الرِّجسthe defilement
Blessed is the one who rests securely in the grave:
Happy is the one who sleeps secure in the grave!
There the sickness is healed, or the defilement cleansed.
There illness is cured, or defilement is cleansed.
