حذارِBeware فأحداقُfor the pupils الملاحِthe beauties حبوبُseeds
إذاwhen التُقِطتare plucked منهاfrom them القلوبُthe hearts تذوبُmelt
Beware, for the beauties’ pupils are seeds;
Beware, the glances of the sailors are love seeds,
when they are plucked, they make hearts melt.
When hearts are picked from them, they melt.
ولكنّand yet قلباًa heart لمdid not يُفَتِّحهُmake it blossom لحظُهاher glance
وليسَand there is not لهُfor it منهاfrom her هوىًlove ونصيبand a share
But a heart her glance has not made blossom,
But a heart that her glance did not open,
and that has neither love nor a share from her,
And he has no passion or fate from her,
كغصنٍlike a branch بلاwithout زهرِblossoms وزهرٍand blossoms بلاwithout شذاfragrance
فعيشُكَso your life إنif لمdo not تهوَlove كيفَhow يطيبbecomes sweet
is like a branch without blossoms, and blossoms without fragrance.
Is like a branch without flowers, and a flower without fragrance,
So how can your life be sweet if you do not love?
So if you do not love, how can your life be sweet?
تمتعenjoy yourself منfrom الدنياthe world وَفِand give النفسَthe soul حقَّهاits due
وأنتَand you لأنواعِby the kinds of الجمالِbeauty طروبenraptured
Enjoy the world, and give your soul its due,
Find pleasure in life and give your soul its right,
while you delight in every kind of beauty.
While you are inclined to all kinds of beauty.
فماfor ... is not العيشُlife إِلاbut زهرةٌa flower قدalready تفتَّحتhas blossomed
لهاfor it الحبُّlove لونٌa color والتغزُّلُand love verse طيبfragrance
For life is but a flower that has opened:
For life is but a flower that has blossomed,
love is its color, and love verse its fragrance.
Love has color for it, and romance is its fragrance.
فأقبلso approach عليهاtoward it فيin الصباحِthe morning وشمَّهاand smell it
سينثُرهاwill scatter it عندَat المساءِevening هُبوبa gust
So approach it in the morning and breathe its scent;
So turn to it in the morning and smell it,
a gust will scatter it at evening.
The winds will scatter it in the evening.
فكلُّfor every جمالٍbeauty منهfrom it زالتhas departed غضارةٌfreshness
وكلُّand every شبابٍyouth فيهinto it دبَّhas crept مشيبgray hair
For from every beauty some freshness has departed,
Every beauty that has lost its freshness,
and into every youth gray hair has crept.
And every youth in whom old age has crept,
I fell in love with أجفاناًeyelids فسلَّتso they drew سيوفَهاtheir swords
عليَّagainst me وكانتand there was هدنةٌa truce وحروبand wars
I fell in love with eyelids, so they drew their swords
I fell for eyelids, so their swords
against me; there was a truce, and there were wars.
Became a truce and wars upon me.
فأيقَنتُso I knew for certain أنthat الحبَّlove كالحربِlike war خدعةٌa ruse
وكلُّand every صبورٍsteadfast person فيin الجلادِcombat غلوبvictorious
Then I knew for certain that love, like war, is a ruse,
So I was certain that love is like war, a deception,
and all who endure in combat prevail.
And every patient one in torment is defeated.
أساكنةًO dweller فوقَabove الخمائلِthe groves والرُّبىand the hills
صِلينيjoin me فإنّيfor I اليومَtoday جئتُhave come أتوبI repent
O dweller above the groves and hills,
Dwelling above the velvet and the meadows,
join me, for today I have come to repent.
Pray for me, for today I have come to repent.
سيخضعُwill submit هذاthis القلبُheart بعدَafter تمرُّدٍrebellion
ومنand from حَولِهِaround it بعدَafter الجنانِthe gardens لهيبflame
This heart will submit after rebellion,
This heart will submit after rebellion,
and around it, in place of gardens, is flame,
And around it, after the gardens, is a blaze.
كقشرٍlike rind منof الرمّانِthe pomegranate أصبَحَhas become يابساًdry
وحبُّكِand your love مثلُlike الحَبّthe seeds فيهِinside it رطيبmoist
like pomegranate rind that has grown dry,
It has become like a dry pomegranate peel,
while your love, like the seeds within it, is moist.
And your love is like the juicy seeds within.
ألمdid you not تذكريremember باللهِby God أولَthe first ليلةٍnight
وأولَand the first وَعدٍpromise والهلالُand the crescent رقيبa watcher
Do you not remember, by God, the first night,
Do you not remember God on the first night,
and the first promise, with the crescent keeping watch?
And the first promise, with the crescent watching?
وفيand in نورِهِits light ماwhat فيin اللِّحاظِglances منof الهوىpassion
وفيand in غَزليmy love verse قلبيmy heart عليكِfor you يذوبmelts
And in its light was the passion that glances hold,
In its light is the passion in the gazes,
and in my love verse, my heart melts for you.
And in my flirting, my heart melts for you.
فقلتُso I said إِلامَuntil when الصبرُpatience والشوقُwhile longing غالِبيoverpowering me
وأنتِwhile you إذاwhen جدَّgrew earnest الغرامُpassion لعوبplayful
So I said, “How long must I endure, with longing overpowering me,
So I said, why patience and longing defeat me,
while you, when passion grows earnest, are playful?”
And you, when passion is serious, play games?
فقلتِthen you said وقدwhile already وَارىveiled الهلالُthe crescent جبينَهُits brow
دعِleave الوَردthe rose إنَّindeed الشَّوكَthe thorn منهُfrom it قريبclose
Then you said, as the crescent veiled its brow,
You said, as the crescent concealed its forehead,
“Leave the rose, for the thorn is close to it.”
“Leave the roses, for thorns are close.”
