Before dawn the young men walked, smiling,

And behind them their sisters wept.

Before parting, they spoke through their glances

And their tears, and their talk turned to sorrow.

And dew poured upon the blossoms of a leafy grove

When they fell to weeping and embracing.

It was as though, in holding back their tears,

They kindled embers buried in their hearts.

And as though the women, shedding theirs so profusely,

Had turned their hearts' very cores into eyes.

How dreadful was the scene of farewell in

A land that hurls its sons to the seas!

I melt with sorrow for the maidens whenever

A collared dove coos mournfully, and I fill with longing.

    لا طِيبَ عن أطيابهِ يُغنينا

    Those sisters are sweet basil to us;

No perfume can replace its fragrance for us.

Our souls, in their misery and their bliss,

Long for their approval and gentleness.

And how often I recalled their eyes and the tears

They let flow, warm, on the day of farewell.

Then I saw them as light and pearls within my heart,

And kept them as my dearest, most precious treasure.

Our sisters, time has preserved freshness

In you; if you remember us, we live anew.

For we walked without fear of death

Or hardship, and we were unaware.

Then the waves of a sea carried us away, never

To heal you or to heal us.

    نزَقُ الشَّبابِ بِنَيلِها يُغرينا

    Happiness is a deadly deception;

Youth's recklessness tempts us to attain it.

So remember us with smiles in the darkness,

For your lips are stars for travelers by night.

And pray for us each evening

And morning, for your prayers protect us.

And stretch your hands toward the sea upon which

We melted away in remorse and longing.

    فلعلَّ روحاً بالشَّذا تأتينا

    And plant flowers in remembrance of us;

Perhaps a spirit will come to us with their fragrance.

And scatter some of them at morning on the east wind,

Like treasures scattering from our hands.

Our sisters, in your tears there is a purity

That has stirred the noblest feelings within us.

When they scattered in sorrow as flames across

The darkness, we saw stars guiding us.

Oh, how lovely your voices are! For they are

Melodies of rapture that stir longing in the sorrowful.

Their enchantment has worked upon hardness,

So even boulders learn to soften for them.

From your tears I took the verse of my poem,

And took your speech as its melody.

Our sisters, who lie sleepless for our sake,

Do you know what we endure in separation?

You weep from anguish; through fortitude, there lingered

Beneath the eyelids the tears of weeping men.

Years have passed over you that have passed over us—

Dark years, whose memory endures for years.

In them our love and our youth were scattered,

Until their April turned to October.

How wretched we were in them and in recalling them!

For their wounds have defeated the healers.

Your eyelids grew sore from their tears,

And our ribs were wounded by groaning.

    Our sisters, life is short

Amid the burdens that wear us down.

Forever we soothe our souls with hope,

While time keeps us far from our desires.

That bygone past is hard to bring back,

And harder still is success in our future.

Nothing past can be hoped for, while the future

Is feared; between the two states we have suffered.

So when we meet where our farewell took place,

We lament separation awhile, and weep awhile.

From us, greetings to the dwelling places of loved ones,

To which, and to you, love draws us close.

Within them, you are their solace and their beauty,

And through you they draw the souls of those far away.

This greeting is held in immortal verse

On earth; what destroys us cannot destroy it.

So our mountains, our plains, and our woodlands

Forever repeat the ringing of its echo.
