    Answer me, O silent universe,

and remind me, for I have forgotten.

And tell me a little about your Creator,

for what is written about Him has not guided me.

I doze over the Torah and the Gospel,

and in the Qur'an, the descriptions bore me.

And in the three books, I have been amused by

tales that delight but do not nourish.

And each claims revelation and truth,

while for a delusion we strive to the death.

How, then, did Moses part the sea, so that

he crossed with his people, and manna was their food?

And how did Jesus die and rise alive,

like Jonah when a whale cast him out?

A tale of superstition is recounted in religion,

and humankind has gone blind, but I have not.

Does man build in this world and acquire possessions,

as a spider has woven homes,

and after death enter into nothingness,

with no final destination or resting place?

Or is the hereafter reward or punishment,

for which prisons or homes have been built,

and does God's voice rise on Judgment Day,

while the voices around Him fall quiet?

For on the dusty earth, a man of piety and godliness

    delights in ascetic devotion and prayer;

and an unbeliever has walked merrily upon it,

and his sign is that he harms and does not escape.

Which of the two, then, is right? There is no proof

for this one or that, nor any certainty.

So speak to us as You spoke to Moses

and Jesus, O Giver of life and Bringer of death.

    فحتّامَ التَّسَتُّرُ والسكوت

    Or else all people will go astray in doubt;

then how long this concealment and silence?

And we, bewildered, do not know:

do we live after death, or do we die?
