وقلتَand you said لهُto him قَهَرناwe vanquished المُعتَديناthe aggressors
Brother of the fair one, will you not go to my opponent
So people may know which of us is a coward
and tell him: We have vanquished the aggressors.
When the eyes of witnesses stir
وماand ... not فيin نَصرناour victory فخرٌpride ولكنbut
أرَدناwe wanted أنto نكونَwe be مؤدّبيناchasteners
There is no pride in our victory, but
But my invitation to the opponent is shameful
we wished to teach a lesson.
For I do not consider him a peer
ليعلمَso he may know أنَّناthat we فتيانُyoung men صِدقٍof truth
So he may know we are true-hearted young men
He repeats my poetry like an echo so I grieve
who hasten to answer the call of honor.
For a poetaster leading the claimers
صَرَعناwe laid low كلَّevery جبارٍtyrant عنيدٍobstinate
وماand ... not كنّاwe were بذاكَof that مُفاخِريناboasting
We have laid low every obstinate tyrant,
He has plotted evil and temptation between me
and we have not boasted of it.
And the prominent masters of my people
وإناand indeed we إنif نَظمناwe composed شِعرَpoetry صدقٍof truth
نظمناهُwe composed it لِقَومٍfor a people شاعريناpoetically sensitive
And if we compose truthful poetry,
I am one of them and they are like me, honorable
we compose it for people with poetic feeling.
So we are not envious and hateful
وإنَّاand indeed we إنif أفضناwe poured forth نورَlight حقٍّof truth
أفَضناهwe poured it forth لقومٍfor a people مُبصريناseeing
And if we pour forth the light of truth,
Reform or righteousness we are known for
we pour it forth for people who can see.
And we were not corrupt or corrupting
نغرِّدُwe sing ماwhat نغرِّدُwe sing بالقَوافيin rhymes
لنُطرِبَto delight نُخبةَthe elite المتمدّنيناof the civilized
We sing what we sing in rhyme
Is there a place for him amongst the bones
to delight the elite of the civilized.
If they come to me in surrender?
وليسَand ... not يهمُّناconcerns us أنthat ضاعwas lost درٌّpearls
لدىamong أجلافِناour boors المتعصِّبيناthe bigoted
Nor does it concern us if pearls are wasted
And virtues have greeted you with smiles
among our bigoted boors.
For I have told them the certain news
فللأشعارِfor poetry has تأثيرٌan influence جميلٌlovely
علىon قلبٍa heart حوَىheld طرباًrapture وليناand tenderness
For poetry has a lovely influence
Is it not enough pride that my poetry
on a heart that holds rapture and tenderness.
Has ambition for you and I was coveting it?
سلواask عنّاabout us الحسودَthe envious man متىwhen رآناhe saw us
حَيارَىbewildered كالأرانبlike rabbits راكِضيناrunning
Ask the envious man about us: when did he see us
And your companion, the gallant young man
bewildered, running like rabbits?
Is a leader among the reformers
أينكُرُdoes he deny بَطشَناour fierce assault يومَthe day التَقيناwe met
وكنّاand we were قائلينَspeaking وفاعليناand acting
Does he deny our fierce assault the day we met,
You see the lofty ambition in him
when we were men of words and deeds?
When the generous ascend, struggling
وكنّاand we were حاملينَcarrying لِواءَa banner عزٍّof honor
يظلِّلُناshades us ويحميand protects الأقربيناthe kin
And we were carrying a banner of honor
Place your palms in his hand, and say
that shaded us and protected our kin.
You are truthful, so be the leader of the finest
إذاif ما(emphasis) شاءَhe wished تجربةًa trial رآناhe saw us
بتَجربةِin testing العزائمِthe resolves راغبيناeager
If he wishes a trial, he will find us
We were created for the earth, so dismount it
eager to put our resolves to the test,
And leave our opponents stumbling
ليدريso ... may know الناسُthe people منwho منّاamong us جبانٌa coward
إذاwhen حامتhovered عيونُthe eyes الشّاهديناof the witnesses
so people may know which of us is a coward
Have you not seen how the eagle of the air ascends
when the witnesses' eyes hover over us.
And the arrows of hunters have missed?
ولكنbut دَعوتيmy challenge للخَصمِto the opponent عيبٌa fault
لأنيbecause I لستُam not أحسِبهُI consider him قريناan equal
But my challenge to my opponent is a fault,
And how the wandering planet runs
for I do not consider him my equal.
While the minds of observers are confused?
يردِّدُhe repeats كالصّدىlike an echo شِعريmy poetry فأرثيso I pity
لِشعرورٍfor a poetaster يقودُleads المدَّعيناthe pretenders
He repeats my poetry like an echo, and I pity
And how the sun rises each day
a poetaster who leads the pretenders.
Upon our wicked and righteous?
سَعىhe strove بالشرِّwith malice والإغراءِand incitement بَينيbetween me
وبينَand between كبارِthe great men قوميof my people النابغيناthe gifted
He stirred up malice and incitement between me
We were born in our nature great
and the eminent, gifted men of my people.
Thus the Lord of the worlds has willed
أناI am منهمone of them وهمand they مِثليlike me كرامٌnoble
فَلسناfor we are not حاسِدينَenvious ومبغِضيناand hateful
I am one of them, and they are noble like me;
for we are neither envious nor hateful.
بإصلاحٍfor reform عُرفناwe are known أوor صلاحٍuprightness
فلمand ... not نكُwe were فاسِدينَcorrupt ومُفسديناand corrupting
We are known for reform, or for uprightness;
and we have not been corrupt or corrupters.
وهلand is there بينَamong العِظامِthe great لهُfor him مقامٌa place
إذاwhen جاؤواthey came عليَّto me مُسلِّميناsaluting
And has he any place among the great,
when they come to greet me?
وحيّتكِand greeted you المكارمُthe noble virtues باسماتٍsmiling
فقدfor indeed أخبَرتُهاI told them الخبرَthe news اليقيناthe certain
And the noble virtues greet you, smiling,
for I have told them the sure tidings.
ألاdoes ... not يكفيكِsuffice you فخراًas pride أنَّthat شِعريmy poetry
عَليكِupon you هَمَىpoured وكنتُand I was بهِwith it ضَنيناsparing
Does it not give you enough pride that my poetry
has poured upon you, though I was sparing with it?
وصاحِبُكِand your companion الفَتىthe young man حرٌّfree جَسُورٌdaring
زعيمٌa leader فيin صفوفِthe ranks المُصلِحيناof the reformers
And your young companion is free and daring,
a leader in the ranks of the reformers.
ترينَyou see الهمَّةَthe resolve الشماءَthe lofty فيهin him
إذاwhen طلعَcame forth الكِرامُthe noble مُجاهِديناstriving
You see lofty resolve in him
when the noble come forth striving.

صَدَقتَyou spoke truly فكنso be زَعيمَthe leader الأفضليناof the best
Place both your palms in his hand and say:
You have spoken truly; be the leader of the best.
خُلِقناwe were created للذُّرَىfor the heights فاجثمso perch عَليهاupon them
ودَعand leave حسَّادَناour enviers مُتَدَحرجيناtumbling
We were made for the heights, so perch upon them,
and leave our enviers tumbling down.

Have you not seen how the eagle of the sky soars,
while the hunters' arrows miss,
وكيفَand how الكَوكبُthe star السيّارُthe wandering يجريcourses
وقدand indeed حارَتwere baffled عقولُthe minds الراصِديناof the observers

and how the sun shines every day
upon our wicked and the righteous?

كذلكَthus شاءَwilled ربُّthe Lord of العالميناthe worlds
We were born great in our swaddling clothes;
thus willed the Lord of the worlds.
