Is there, anywhere in the land, one who lies down awaiting God’s provision?
Is there a place in the land for Rizq Allah to lie down,
Or is there none? For a rough surface leaves his skin mottled.
or none? For his skin is mottled from roughness.
أضحىhas become الصِّيَامُfasting مُنيحاًa shareless gaming arrow وَسطَamid عَرصَتِنَاour courtyard
أضحى الصِّيَامُ مُنيحاً وَسطَ عَرصَتِنَا

Fasting has come to kneel, like a camel, in the middle of our courtyard.
Fasting has become a shareless gaming arrow amid our courtyard;
Would that fasting were in some land cut off from us by rugged wilds!
if only fasting were in a land beyond thickets!
إنif صُمتُI fast أوجَعَنيpains me بَطنِيmy belly وأقلَقَنيand troubles me
إن صُمتُ أوجَعَني بَطنِي وأقلَقَني

بين الجَوَانِحِ مسُّ الجُوعِ والعَطَشِ
If I fast, my belly pains me and leaves me restless—
If I fast, my belly pains me, and I am troubled
within my ribs, from the pang of hunger and thirst.
between my ribs by the touch of hunger and thirst.

And if I go out by night toward their mosque,
And if I go out at night toward their mosque,
my eyesight troubles me—it has already been betrayed by bleary dimness.
my sight, betrayed by bleariness, brings me harm.
