If you seek a life sweet and unclouded,

Then put poetry aside and become a slave trader.

You will acquire rare treasures—charming, full-breasted women,

    Who hold weddings every evening.

And the wind, meanwhile, remains constant,

Whether you are easygoing in your selling or a hard bargainer.

A spell of ill fortune has come upon the poets,

So they have gulped down cup after cup.

They have donned the shirts of stagnation—so seek

Through slave trading, earnings that banish bankruptcy.
