Many a day I passed, not with wine,

But with our chess, moving the rooks about,

وسط بستان قاسم في جنان

قد علونا مفارشاً وتخاخا

In Qasim's orchard, amid gardens.

We had settled on bedding and couches.

وحوينا من الظباء غزالا

طرياً لحمه يفوق المخاخا

طرياً لحمه يفوق المخاخا

And we secured a gazelle from among the gazelles,

Tender, its flesh finer than marrow.

فنصبنا له الشباك زماناً

فنصبنا له الشباك زماناً

ونصبنا مع الشباك فخاخا

ونصبنا مع الشباك فخاخا

So we set nets for it for a time,

And alongside the nets we set traps.

فأصبناهُ بعد خمسة شهر

فأصبناهُ بعد خمسة شهر

وسط نهر يشخ ماه شخاخا

وسط نهر يشخ ماه شخاخا

Then we caught it after five months,

Midstream in a river whose water gushed copiously.
