تَطاوَلَhas grown long هذاthis اللَيلُnight ماnot يَتَبَلَّجُbrightens with dawn
وَأَعيَتand have proved unyielding غَواشيthe veils of عَبرَتيmy weeping ماnot تَفَرَّجُlift
This night drags on and will not brighten,
and the veils of my weeping resist me and will not lift.
أَبيتُI spend the night كَئيباًsorrowful لِلهُمومِbecause of cares كَأَنَّماas though
خِلالَbetween ضُلوعيmy ribs جَمرَةٌan ember تَتَوَهَّجُglows
I spend the night sorrowful with cares, as though
an ember glows between my ribs.
فَطَوراًso at times أَمَنّيI give hopes to النَفسَthe soul مِنfrom تَكتَمِTaktam المُنىhopes
وَطَوراًand at times إِذاwhen ماever لَجَّpersists بيwithin me الحُزنُgrief أَنشِجُI sob
At times I feed my soul with hopes of Taktam,
and at times, when grief persists within me, I sob.
وَأَبصَرتُand I saw ماwhat مَرَّتpassed بِهِby it يَومَon the day of يَأجَجِYa'jaj
ظِباءٌgazelles وَماand what كانَتhad been بِهِfor it العَينُthe eye نَخلِجُwe twitch (irregular here)
And I saw what, on the day of Ya'jaj, had been passed
by gazelles—and what the eye had been twitching for.
فَإِنَّكِfor indeed you عَينٌan eye قَدalready أَهِبتِyou have summoned بِصاحِبٍto a companion
حَبيبٍbeloved لَهُhe has فيin الصَدرِthe breast حُبٌّlove مُوَلَّجُlodged deep within
For you, O eye, have summoned a companion,
a beloved one, with love lodged deep in his breast.
لَقَدindeed قَطَعَsevered الواشونَthe slanderers ماwhat كانَwas بَينَناbetween us
وَنَحنُand we إِلىfor أَنthat يُوصَلَbe restored الوَصلُthe bond أَحوَجُmore in need
The slanderers have severed what was between us,
though we are all the more in need of our bond restored.
رَأَواthey saw عَورَةًa vulnerable spot فَاِستَقبَلوهاso they confronted it بِأَلبِهِمwith their united forces
فَراحواso they went at evening عَلىtoward ماwhat لاnot نُحِبُّwe love وَأَدلَجواand they traveled by night
They saw a weakness and confronted it with their combined forces,
so they went forth at evening toward what we hate, and traveled by night.
فَلَيتَso would that الأُولىthose who هُمthey كَثَّرواmade much فيconcerning فِراقِناour parting
بِأَجمَعِهِمall of them together فيin لُجَّةِthe depths of البَحرِthe sea لَجَّجواventured into deep water
Would that those who did so much to part us
had all plunged into the deep waters of the sea!
هُمُthey مَنَعوناdenied us ماwhat نَلَذُّwe delight in وَنَشتَهيand we desire
وَأَذكَواand kindled عَلَيناagainst us نارَa fire of صُرمِestrangement تُؤَجَّجُis fanned into flame
They denied us what we delight in and desire,
and kindled against us a fire of estrangement, fanned into flame.
وَكانواand they were أُناساًpeople كُنتُI used to آمَنُfeel safe from عَيبَهُمtheir faultfinding
فَلَمbut did not يَنهَهُمrestrain them حِلمٌforbearance وَلَمand did not يَتَحَرَّجواfeel scruples
And they were people whose faultfinding I once felt safe from,
yet no forbearance restrained them, nor did they feel any scruple.
وَلَوand if تَرَكوناthey had left us لاmay not هَدىguide اللَهُGod أَمرَهُمtheir affairs
وَلَمand had not يُبرِمواthey had twisted together قَولاًa tale مِنَfrom النَقرُfaultfinding يُنسَجُis woven
Had they left us alone—may God not guide their affairs—
and not spun a tale woven from faultfinding,
لَأَوشَكَwould soon have صَرفُthe vicissitudes of الدَهرِtime تَفريقَseparation بَينَناbetween us
وَلاand not يَستَقيمُruns straight الدَهرُtime وَالدَهرُand time أَعوَجُcrooked
the vicissitudes of time would soon have parted us;
and time does not run straight, for time is crooked.
عَسَتperhaps كُربَةٌan affliction أَمسَيتُI came to evening فيهاin it مُقيمَةٌabiding
يَكونُthere will be لَناfor us مِنهاfrom it رَخاءُease وَمَخرَجُand a way out
Perhaps the abiding anguish in which evening finds me
will bring us ease and a way out,
فَيُكبَتَso will be humbled أَعداءُenemies وَيَجذَلَand will rejoice آلِفٌa loving companion
لَهُhe has كَبِدٌa liver مِنfrom لَوعَةِthe burning anguish of الحُزنِgrief يُلعَجُis scorched
so enemies will be humbled and a loving companion will rejoice,
whose liver is scorched by the burning anguish of grief.
وَأَشفَقَand feared قَلبيmy heart مِنof فِراقِparting from خَريدَةٍa shy maiden
لَهاshe has نَسَبٌlineage فيin فَرعِa branch of فِهرٍFihr مُتَوَّجُcrowned
And my heart feared parting from a shy maiden,
whose lineage is crowned in a branch of Fihr,
وَكَفٌّand a hand كَهُدّابِlike the fringe of الدِمَقسِfine silk لَطيفَةٌdelicate
بَهاon it دَرسُa faint trace of حِنّاءٍhenna حَديثٌfresh مُضَرَّجُstained crimson
with a delicate hand like the fringe of fine silk,
upon it a faint, fresh trace of henna, stained crimson.
يَجولُmoves freely وِشاحاهاher two sashes وَيَعرَبُand speaks clearly حَجلُهاher anklet
وَيَشبَعُand is sated مِنهاby her وَقفُa bangle of عاجٍivory وَدُملُجُand an armlet
Her two sashes move freely, and her anklet speaks,
and an ivory bangle and an armlet are filled out by her.
وَقُلتُand I said لِعَبّادٍto 'Abbad وَجاءَand arrived كِتابُهاher letter
لِهذاfor this وَرَبّيby my Lord كانَتِhad been العَينُthe eye تَخلِجُtwitching
And I said to 'Abbad, when her letter arrived:
'For this, by my Lord, my eye had been twitching!'
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمَخزونٌindeed pent up عَشِيَّةَon the evening زُرتُهاI visited her
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhen ماever زُرتُهاI visited her لاnot أُعَرَّجُbe held back
And I was indeed pent up the evening I visited her,
and whenever I visited her, I would not be held back.
وَخَطَّطتُand I traced lines فيon ظَهرِthe surface of الحَصيرِthe mat كَأَنَّنيas though I were
أَسيرٌa captive يَخافُfears القَتلَbeing killed وَلهانُdistraught مُفصَجُunbound (uncertain reading)
And I traced lines on the surface of the mat, as though I were
a captive afraid of being killed, distraught and unbound.
وَلَمّاand when اِلتَقَيناwe met لَجلَجَتshe faltered فيin كَلامِهاher speech
وَمِنand among آيَةِa sign of الصُرمِestrangement الحَديثُspeech المُلَجلَجُfaltering
When we met, she faltered in her speech;
and faltering speech is a sign of estrangement.
كَأَنَّas though وَساويسَthe whispers of الحُلِيِّthe jewelry إِذاwhen مَشَتshe walked
وَشارَفَهُنَّand rose above them اللُؤلُؤُthe pearls المُتَشَرَّجُstrung in rows
It was as though the whispers of her jewelry, when she walked,
with the strung pearls rising above them,
تَخَشُّشُthe rustling of باليwithered عِشرِقٍsenna زَجَلَتraised a sound بِهِthrough it
يَمانِيَةٌa wind from Yemen هَبَّتblew مِنَduring اللَيلِthe night سَجسَجُmild
were the rustling of withered senna, set ringing
by a mild wind from Yemen that rose in the night.
فَأَعياso proved elusive عَلَيَّto me القَولُspeech وَالقَولُand speech واسِعٌvast
وَفيand in القَولِspeech مُستَنٌّa path كَثيرٌmany وَمَخرَجُand a way out
So speech failed me, though speech is vast,
and in speech lie many paths and a way out.
