May God water Jazan and whoever dwells nearby,
God watered Jazan, so whoever untied its protector,
and every watercourse of Saham and Surdad,
Every outpour and arrows and spears showered down,
وَمَحصولَةَand Mahsulah الدارِthe dwelling الَّتيwhich خَيَّمَتshe camped بِهِin it

and Mahsulah, the dwelling where she camped;
And the harvest of the house that settled there,
may He water it, drenching every rise and open plain.
He watered it, quenching every meadow and plain.
فَأَنتِfor you الَّتيthe one who كَلَّفَتنيyou compelled me البِركَal-Birk شاتِياًwintering
وَأَورَدتِنيهِand you brought me to it فَاِنظُريso look أَينَwhere مَورِديmy watering place
For it was you who made me go to al-Birk in winter,
You, who tasked me with seeking goodness while traveling,
and brought me to it—look where my watering place lies.
And made me pursue it-look where my pursuit has led!
فَواso, oh نَدَماregret إِذwhen لَمdid not أَعجُI turn aside إِذwhen تَقولُshe says ليto me

Oh, my regret that I did not turn aside when she said to me:
Oh how I regret that I did not rush when you told me-
Come along and escort us until midmorning tomorrow.
"Go ahead of us, accompanying us to tomorrow's morning."
تَكُنyou will be سَكَناًa comfort أَوor تَقرَرِyou gladden العَينَthe eye إِنَّهاfor it

You will be a comfort, or gladden the eye, for it
Whether you reside or comfort the eye, it
will weep repeatedly; afterward, find solace or grieve.
Will surely weep bitterly, so discharge me after I plead.
لَعَلَّكَperhaps you أَنto تَلقىmeet مُحِبّاًa lover فَتَشتَفيand find relief

Perhaps you will meet a lover and find relief
Perhaps you will find a lover, and be satisfied
in seeing a white gazelle, her bare body soft and smooth.
By seeing a graceful figure of one unadorned.
بِلادَlands العُدىthe foes لَمdid not تَأتِهاyou visit them غَيرَexcept أَنَّهاthat they
بِهاهَمُّin them is the concern نَفسيof my soul مِنamong تَهامٍa Tihamah dweller وَمُنجِدِand a Najd dweller
You have not visited the lands of foes, yet
The abode of enmity did not come to it, except that
my heart's concern lies there, among Tihamah's people and Najd's.
My soul frets for it, from anxiety and fervor.
وَماand not جَعَلَتmade ماwhat بَينَbetween مَكَّةَMecca ناقَتيmy she-camel
إِلىto المِركِal-Mirk إِلّاexcept نَومَةَa nap المُتَجَهِّدِthe weary man
My she-camel made the distance from Mecca
I did not make what was between Mecca my she-camel
to al-Mirk no more than a weary man's nap.
To Al-Mirq except a dozing of one exerting effort.
وَكادَتand she nearly قُبَيلَjust before الصُبحِdawn تَنبِذُcasts off رَحلَهاher saddle
بِذَروَةَat Dharwah مِنbecause of لَغطِclamor القَطاthe sandgrouse المُتَبَدِّدِscattered
And just before dawn she nearly threw off her saddle
Nearing dawn, she almost tossed off her baggage
at Dharwah, from the din of the scattered sandgrouse.
At the summit of the clamor of scattered cats.
فَأَصبَحتُso I became مِمّاof what كانَwas بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهاand between her
سِوىexcept ذِكرِهاremembering her كَالقابِضِlike one grasping الماءَthe water بِاليَدِwith the hand
Thus, in all that once passed between me and her,
By morning I was, from what was between me and it,
save her memory, I am like one grasping water in his hand.
Nothing but the memory of it, like one grasping water in his hand.
