وَساداتِها عِندَ المَقامِ تُذَبَّحُ
Is Quraysh deliberately abandoning its nobles
and its chiefs as they are slaughtered beside the Station?

مَخافَةَ يَومٍ أَن يُباحوا وَيُفضَحوا
While they seek refuge in God, neighbors of His House,
fearing a day when they might be made fair game and disgraced.

And earlier they were bombarded by catapult, though they hurled no missiles,
and time and again with arrows that rend and wound.

And afterward they charged fiercely upon them,
so Radm Harām and Abṭaḥ streamed with them.

And they found men seated beneath their helmets;
behold, beneath those helmets lies death laid bare.

وَلَلمَوتُ مِن بَعضِ المَعيشَةِ أَروَحُ
He is the one who forsakes abundant wealth out of honor,
and death is surely more restful than some ways of living.

He freely gives a life whose like is never given,
which had room to withdraw, had it accepted disgrace.

And splendid in battle is Uthman, son of the clan's sister,
when war reveals its fang, baring its teeth.
