تَعُدُّونَyou deem قَتلاًa killing فيin الحَرامِthe sacred month عَظيمَةًa grave offense
تَعُدُّونَ قَتلاً في الحَرامِ عَظيمَةً

وَأَعظَمُ مِنهُ لَو يَرى الرُشدَ راشِدُ
You deem a killing in the sacred month a grave offense;
You consider killing in the sacred month a grave sin,
yet greater than that—if a discerning man could see the right course—
Though greater if the righteous saw true guidance.
صُدودُكُمyour turning away عَمّاfrom what يَقولُsays مُحَمَّدٌMuhammad

وَكُفرٌ بِهِ وَاللَهُ رَبِّيَ شاهِدُ
is your turning away from what Muhammad says,
Your rejection of what Muhammad says,
and disbelief in him—and God, my Lord, is witness—
And disbelief in him, while God is my witness.

and your driving its people from God's mosque,
Your expulsion of God's people from His mosque,
so that no one may be seen prostrating to God in the House.
Lest prostrators to God be seen in the House.

For we, though you reproached us for killing him,
Yet if you reproach us for killing him,
and a wrongdoer and an envier spread alarming rumors about Islam,
And those envious and hostile to Islam roar,

gave our spears a draught from Ibn al-Hadrami—
We quenched our spears in Ibn al-Hadrami's blood
at Nakhlah, when Waqid kindled war—
When he ignited war, fanning its flames.

of blood; and Uthman, son of Abd Allah, is among us,
Blood between us and the son of Abdullah, Usman,
an unyielding rawhide shackle wrestling with him.
Whose neck sinews stubbornly resist the sword.
