حينَwhen وَلّىturned away الناسُthe people وَاِنخَذَلواand fell back
هَرَباًin flight وَاِحمَرَّتِand reddened الحَدَقُthe eyes (pupils)
When the people turned away and lost heart,
When the people turned away and fell back,
fleeing, and their eyes grew red,
Fleeing, and their eyes reddened,
شَدَّcharged كَاللَّيثِlike the lion الهِزَبرِthe mighty lion وَقَدand already
عَظُمَgrew great الأَشجانُthe sorrows وَالقَلَقُand anxiety
he charged like a fierce and mighty lion, while
He charged like a mighty lion, while
grief and alarm had grown intense.
Sorrows and anxiety had grown great.
لَمdid not يَخِبfail إِذwhen شَدَّcharged جَمعُهُمtheir host
وَالقَناand the spears إِذat ذاكَthat time تَأتَلِقُgleam
He did not falter when their host charged,
He did not fail when their host charged,
and the lances at that moment gleamed,
And the spears were gleaming then,
وَسُيوفٌand swords فيin أَكُفِّهِمُtheir palms
كَحِمامِlike the doom المَوتِof death تَصطَلِقُclang
and swords in their hands
And swords in their hands
clashed like death’s decree.
Clanged like death's doom.
فَتَوَلّواso they turned away بَعدَafter ماthat طَمِعواthey hoped
وَبِغَيرِand without اللَهِGod ماnot اِنطَلَقواthey departed
Then they turned away after they had hoped,
So they turned away after they had hoped,
and none but God sent them fleeing.
And they did not depart without God.
