أَمسَتcame at evening هُمومٌsorrows ثِقالٌheavy قَدindeed تَأَوَّبُنيreturned to me by night
مَثلُlike الصُخورِthe rocks عِظامٌimmense هَدَّتِcrushed الجَسَداthe body
At evening, heavy sorrows have returned to me,
The burdens are now heavy upon me, bending me over
huge as rocks, they have crushed my body.
Like rocks my bones weakened my body
لَيتَif only القِيامَةَthe Resurrection قامَتhad come عِندَat مَهلِكِهِhis death
كَيلاًso that not نَرىwe see بَعدَهُafter him مالاًwealth وَلاnor وَلَداًoffspring
If only the Resurrection had come at his death,
Would that the Day of Resurrection was upon my killer
so that after him we would see neither wealth nor offspring.
So I no longer see, after it, property or child
وَلَستُand I do not آسىgrieve عَلىover شَيءٍanything فُجِعتُI was bereaved بِهِof it
بَعدَafter الرَسولِthe Messenger إِذاwhen اَمسىhad become مَيِّتاًdead فُقِداwas lost
And I grieve for nothing I have been bereft of
And I do not grieve for anything I was anguished by
after the Messenger, now that he lies dead and is gone.
After the Messenger, when the deceased is missed
كانَhe was المُصَفّىthe purified one مِنَof الآفاتِflaws قَدindeed عَلِمواthey knew
وَفيand in العَفافِchastity فَلاso do not تَعدِلequate بِهِwith him أَحَداanyone
He was free of flaws, as they well knew;
The chosen one knew to be pure of flaws
and in chastity, set no one equal to him.
And in chastity none can match him
كَمhow much لِيَis mine بَعدَكَafter you مِنof هَمٍّgrief يُنَصِّبُنيwearies me
إِذاwhen تَذَكَّرتُI remember أَنّيthat I لاnot أَراكَI see you اَبَداever
How much grief is mine after you, wearing me down,
How much grief remains for me after you
when I remember that I shall never see you again.
When I remember I will never see you again
نَفسيmy soul فِداؤُكَyour ransom مِنas مَيتٍa dead man وَمِنand as بَدَنٍa body
ماhow أَطيَبَsweet الذِكرَthe remembrance وَالأَخلاقَand the character وَالجَسَداand the body
My soul be your ransom, as a dead man and as a body—
My soul is your ransom from a dead and lifeless body
how sweet your remembrance, your character, and your body!
How beautiful your memory, character and body
