ألا مقت اللَهُ سعى الحريص

ألا مقت اللَهُ سعى الحريص

فما جازه الذمُّ إلا إليه

فما جازه الذمُّ إلا إليه

Lo, may God detest the greedy man's striving!

Alas, how God abhors the greedy man’s endeavors,

For blame passes beyond that striving only to reach him.

for only blame itself can reach him.

يسر بما في يدي غيره

يسر بما في يدي غيره

وينسى السرورَ بما في يديهِ

وينسى السرورَ بما في يديهِ

He rejoices in what is in another's hands,

He rejoices at what is in the hands of others,

And forgets to rejoice in what is in his own hands.

and forgets the joy in what he holds in his own.
