He has a field of thoroughbred horses, as though they were
The horse arena is like young women seeking music and splendor
Tipsy, swaying as they seek music and revelry.
Brides adorned by anklets no longer needing jewelry

فلمso did not تبغseek خلخالاًan anklet ولاnor التمَسَتthey sought وقفاan ivory bracelet
Brides whose white leg-markings spare them the need for jewels,
A gray stead you'd think was solid rock
So they sought no anklet, nor asked for an ivory bracelet.
Though bared in its coverings without ornament
فَمِنso among them يَقَقٍpure-white كالطرسِlike parchment تحسَبُyou think أنَّهُthat he

وإنand even though جرّدوهthey stripped him فيin مُلاءتِهِhis cloak التَفَّاhe wrapped himself
Among them is one pure-white as parchment; you would think that he,
A white gave the night half its brilliance
Though they strip him bare, has wrapped himself in his cloak.
And dawn leaned over it, leaving half unseen
وأبلقَand a piebald أعطىgave الليلَthe night نصفَhalf إهابِهِhis hide
وغارَand grew jealous عليهover him الصبحُthe dawn فاتحبسَand reserved النصفاthe half
And a piebald that gave night half his hide,
A pink, dusk shadows play over its hide
And dawn grew jealous over him and reserved the other half.
When it lowered its tail and forelock in submission

And a rose-bay whose hide the twilight of night overspread;
A chestnut, the wind ruffled its leather
Then, when it claimed him, it let down a tail and mane for him.
Without even buffing its skin

And a chestnut whose hide spat out unmixed wine,
A roan, white leather dotted
And a yellow one that had not rubbed his hide with that wine unmixed.

And a grey, silver-skinned and marked with dinar-shaped dapples,
As if a painter trailing his brush
Upon him are lines, not a single letter intelligible,
Let its tail sweep while the ink was still wet

As the strutting cock traced lines on a scribe's parchment,
Storms burst against the enemies
Then dragged his tail across it before it had dried.

From them, tempests blow upon the enemies;
Each part gazelle-like stealing glimpses
With them you will utterly devastate the polytheists' land.

You see each steed like a gazelle, and you are unsure:
It grew used to the lonely desert and his herd
Is it a gazelle you see beneath the dust-cloud, or a steed?
A gift judicious, though deeming him a weakling

And once, in the wilderness, he kept company with his herd;
Named "Noble" for when wanted to race
So she reared him, a foal, thinking him a gazelle-fawn.
It doubled in speed

The word jawād—both 'steed' and 'generous'—applies to him, because
Whenever you ask for speed, he gives twice as much.
