أَعِندَis it at العَبِّdrinking deeply فِيin عَذبِsweet water بَرُودٍcool
أُحَلأُI am driven away قَبلَbefore رَيِّيmy thirst's quenching عَنfrom وُرُودٍcoming to drink
Is it while I drink deeply of sweet, cool water
At a refreshing spring my friend found delight,
that I am barred from drinking before my thirst is quenched?
Refreshing himself after his repast at night;
وَبِيand I have ظَمأthirst كَأَنَّas though حَشَايَmy entrails مِنهُfrom it
عَلَىon جَمرembers تَسَعَّرُblazing فِيin وَقُودُfuel
And I thirst, as though my entrails, because of it,
Thirst parched my throat as if the coal
were on embers blazing amid fuel.
That cooked his food flamed in my soul.
فَيَابنَso, O son of خَلِيفَةِthe caliph of الرَّحمَانِthe All-Merciful فِينَاamong us
وَنَجلَand scion of جَحاجِحٍmighty chieftains صِيدٍproud lords فَصِيدِthen proud lords
So, O son of the All-Merciful's caliph among us,
Thou Khalifah's son of the All-merciful! Thou draught
and scion of mighty chiefs, proud lords after proud lords,
Tempered at the pure celestial fount!
وَمَنand of those يُلفَىare found هَدَاهُguides (probable contextual reading) الدِّينِof the faith منهُمamong them

and of those among whom the faith's guides are found,
Thou who quaffest morn and eve the cup
when they trace their lineage to their forefathers' lofty height:
Of noble deeds, pledged by thy noble ancestors!
أَعيدُواrestore عَادَةًa custom قُطِعَتwas severed عِدَاءًout of hostility
كَمَاjust as كَرَّstruck back الوِصَالُreunion عَلَىagainst الصُّدُودِestrangement
Restore a custom severed by hostility,
Renew the olden beneficence, which once
as reunion strikes back against estrangement.
Poured on friends, but then was shut from foes.
فَهَاso, behold أَنَاI ذَاthis one بِقَصرِكَat your palace مُستَجِيرٌseeking refuge
بَسَطتُI stretched out بِهِthere, at it ذِرَاعِيmy arm بِالوَصيدِat the threshold
So here I am at your palace, seeking refuge;
Lo! here am I an asylum craving
I have stretched out my arm there at the threshold.
From thee, a suppliant this thy bounty lauding.
يَقُولُsay ألجَاهِلُونَthe ignorant وَقدand already رَأَونِيthey saw me
لِهَذَاfor this العَبِدthe slave شَأنٌstanding فِيamong العَبِيدِthe slaves
The ignorant say, having seen me:
Fools exclaim: "What! hath this slave from his lord
"This slave has standing among slaves."
Obtained such favours?" Yes! my help is from the Lord,
وَشَأنِيand my concern كُلُّهُall of it مَولاَيَmy lord حَمِليmy being treated
عَلَىaccording to مَاwhat فِيin يَدَيَّmy two hands مِنَof العُهُودِthe pledges
And my whole concern, my lord, is to be treated
The Lord, who hath inclined this haughty heart
in accordance with the pledges I hold in my hands.
To justice, as these troops incline athwart.
وَدُمand live on وَالدَّهرُwhile time يُسعِدُfavors مَنwhoever تَدَانَىdraws near

And long may you live, while time favors those who draw near,
and burdens those who stay far away with a steep ascent.
