وَمِنAnd among عَجَبٍwonders أَنِّيthat I إِذَاwhen قُمتُI stand قَانِتاًin devotion
لِرَبِّيto my Lord أُنَادِيI call بالصَّلاةِfor prayer وأُعلِنُand I proclaim aloud
And it is strange that, when I stand in devotion

يُقَعقِعُrattles فِيon رجِليmy leg الحَديدُthe iron كأَنَّمَاas though
يُعارِضُanswers صَوتِيmy voice بالأَذَانِwith the call to prayer فَيَلحَنُand so sounds a false note
the iron on my leg rattles, as though

It accompanies my voice with the call to prayer, dissonant,
فَقُلتُSo I said اعِتبَاراًby way of comparison بَينَbetween قَيدِيmy fetter وَمِقوَلِيand my tongue
أَذلكَIs that ناقُوسٌa church bell وَهَذَاand this مُؤَذِّنُa muezzin
So I said, comparing my fetter with my tongue:
So I considered the difference between my shackle and my words:
“Is that a church bell, and this a muezzin?”
Is this a church bell and this a muezzin?
