The violet proved noble and so won preeminence.

And thus the violet will never cease to be noble.

For it outstripped spring's blossoms with its fragrance

and gained a deep-rooted share of unalloyed nobility.

It surpassed the blossoms and alone among them won

the race's victory-reed, and was not surpassed,

resembling in its triumph the chamberlain, the

    most exalted, Imad al-Din Isma'il.

A king who rose above the foremost kings, themselves exalted

in lofty rank through father, grandfather, and clan.

How often they vied with him in glory, yet he surpassed them

in breadth and length on the way to ancestral glory,

as they seek to resemble what he exemplifies for them—

if only they were skilled in comparison and analogy!

Like the gillyflower's imitation of the one held in scorn,

to gain a mere thread of those qualities.

    واليه يُنسَبُ كي يعزّ قَليلا

    And when it claims descent, it claims descent from the violet;

and to the violet it is ascribed, to gain a little honor.

Why does the cabbage-natured flower seek

the exalted chief's preeminence in mere fancy?

Or does it not know that the violet has always

been borne aloft on palms in honor?

Whence could the base gillyflower have the openheartedness of the

generous, noble one, when it will forever remain miserly?

It hides away with its fragrance throughout the day,

so it may not be seen being asked for its fragrant breath.

Until, when darkness comes, it gives it freely,

for it sees only a few asking.

Rank to the nose when time has passed since its picking,

even a little, or it feels itself withering.

And when you read the benefits of flowers described by the

sages, it proves unknown among them.

And benefit, whether the flower is fresh or dried, as you wish,

is obtained in full from the violet.

Its fragrant breath does not change in the two states,

nor when you inhale it in a prepared form.

And it is a treasure of caliphs and kings, who never

go without it, sorted by kind and set apart.

So let it proudly win the highest lot-arrow,

and let the gillyflower retreat from it, abased.
