Why do I see this discord—why?

And how long shall we fling ourselves into its arms?

Discord, strife—woe to Tunisia from them both,

if we do not consider concord and they persist.

Why—when green Tunisia belongs to us all—

do we make her drink a cup overflowing with sickness?

Why, when everyone breathing her air

is her drinking companion, and all within her are fellow drinkers?

Is it not an everlasting disgrace that we

show it estrangement, honoring no bond?

Yes, this nation has indeed become a morsel

for those who wanted it to be food.

And I see, as the nation weeps, that we seem

to show it vengeance when we show it a smile.

    if its lights are darkness.

ourselves hurl swift death at it?

the singing bulbul, when it circles above them,

and these flowers in their prime,

    when lavender branches embrace roses.

Peace upon this breeze when it drifts by,

stirring leaves and making doves weep.

Peace upon my hill, my full moon, and my wave.

Alas for me: I have bidden them farewell.

Sons of my homeland—alas, alas! Were you beguiled

by a phantom that appeared, so you split into adversaries?

You loosed an arrow toward glory—why, then,

did you shoot arrows at my heart after that?

Do you not fear God? Fasten your saddles,

and place a medal upon the country's breast—

by erasing its name; do not make it drink death.

would show you a blaze that has lodged in the heart.

Sorrowful, dejected, lamenting its ill fortune,

drowned in the deep sea of cares, oppressed.

And the sun of discord has withered its youth,

so it has grown grey, though I remember it still a boy.

O Tunisia, do not call down thunder as vengeance

upon us, for we do not deserve retribution.

we hold sacred out of love for it and ardent passion.

Be assured that the causes of discord are founded

on foundations that are fit to be established.

Be assured that we seek your good whenever

we speak, even if words draw more words.

Be assured, and be assured: we shall do our utmost,

all together, to uplift the country—in closing.
