As my beloved had instructed while on his bed.

    Searching longingly for its companion.

Ah, friend, if only you were alive!

And would that your return could make us forget our parting from you!

And if only I knew you were in bliss,

In your new world—a bliss that has delighted you.

Are you alive today in Paradise,

And have you seen there what has delighted you?

Then rejoice, and leave the living one among us

To show us his smile amid his bitter cold.

Whom justice sees as wicked and unjust!

And the gravedigger may envy no one but

A boy who left the world behind for others.
