O you who dwell in this land,

you present the lesson to these people.

Indeed, I recall you coming to

our land, aiming to spread right guidance.

You came to deliver your lofty lesson to

a nation, offering it sound counsel.

You were sent to us by the

West, an envoy to build up the land.

You are one of those men who thought

that, in the universe, we were a kind of inanimate matter,

and sang that they were striving for

humanity's comfort in the shade of affection.

You—in revealing them in yourself—had indeed

been on earth like Shaddad son of 'Ad.

You are a mirror bearing an image

that revealed the obstinacy you had concealed.

You are the one for whom it prepared, from its soil,

a treasure for you that grows each day.

You are the one it supplied, from among its sons,

with those whom you deprived of the taste of sleep.

    Then what? It shames me

to see you today in these lowlands.

What disgrace has brought dishonor upon

a nation that has donned mourning because of it!

Just as Paris was sullied by it,

    by hands—curse them, such hands!

What sort of heart do you harbor, O Mani-

val, when you were so content at heart?

Why does that hand not answer, when it has

deprived two hands of earning sustenance?

We never knew that we were in a land

whose lot has become blackness upon blackness.

O Manival, is this a deed

that the soul made enticing, or is it submission?

If it is that or this, then

you are nothing among us but an inciter of corruption.

Perhaps you have shaken a firmly secured pillar

    between two peoples strongly united.

Perhaps you have kindled a fire; before

its flames die out, a thorn-tree must be stripped bare.

    If Lucien seeks a number

in abundance from you—and that is the aim—

then let him give us rest, and be a wind toward

our fertile land, bringing locusts of every kind.

Or if, over the telegraph, he displays pro-

gress, religion's progress through him is in decline.

For that is true: we have seen pro-

grammes that wore out their viewers with sleeplessness.

How does this age compare with an age gone by?

Has Nimrod returned to the inhabited world?

Is it prudent governance and wisdom that

the Easterner should be hanged? Is this sound judgment?

If he so much as touches a bunch of the

freely offered grapes, is he cast into fetters?

Yet he waters it, guards it, and is its ser-

vant, with no wage to be gained.

Can the writers enumerate for us

what we suffer, when the ink has run dry?

O men of the West, be gentle! What ails you

that a fire-striker is never far from your hands?

When we fell silent, you failed to see that we are

a flame beneath layers of ash.

Indeed, in the East are men who have smiled

at what you do in this struggle.

Their breasts are broad; however much they are wronged,

they show forbearance and the virtues of the generous man.

So do what you wish—rather, let

your violence grow stronger day after day.

Only bear in mind that we are a nation

whose head today has divorced the pillow.

In our homelands we are not your

servants. Is there any end to calamities?

We are not to be repaid with brute force, when

the people gave you the reins of their own affairs.

So treat us justly: justice has a hand

and a tongue that no knotting can restrain.

Manival today reaps what he has sown,

if you will as justice has willed.
