Mislead the people, O my life, if ever

people tell one another of my death.

And be silent the day they lift onto the

planks my body, and wipe away the tears.

And look at me upon their hands, surrounded by

my loved ones, as though at prayer.

After a while they will make my bed

of earth, and my headrest of a pebble.

    وَحَياتي هناك نعمت حَياتي

    Then they will cast me there, alone;

by my life, my life there will be blessed!

Leave the lodging in the morning for the

garden, to behold the beauty of the plants.

    واندبيني هناك في الخَطوات

    And sit beneath a spreading tree, and remember me;

and lament me there as you walk.

Listen to the canary's song, and say:

He used to revel in these melodies.

Teach it to weep after I am gone, so it may comfort

you whenever you yield to sighs.

And look at the beautiful stream, and say:

He used to gaze at himself and at me.

Blacken it, if you can, so that

its appearance becomes a cause for sorrow.

And pick the flowers if you wish, but

    beware of scattering my flowers.

And gather them with all gentleness, and press

them to a breast tormented in life.

    And when darkness comes, and

every eye we fear has fallen into slumber,

then hasten toward my resting place, and lay them

upon my grave, so that my remains may rest.
