    فمزق سَمعي من بِلادي نَحيبها

    I see ignorance's ravages have begun to creep;

So my homeland's wailing tore at my ears.

I see it dragging its train over our heads,

And its blaze still scorches every heart.

So death is indeed sweeter than a life of ignorance,

And its losers have perished, and so have its sorrowful ones.

And the grave is indeed more desirable than spacious palaces,

Whose companion is misery and whose beloved is suffering.

Palaces like great trees, rained upon with gloom,

So their bough put forth the leaves of calamity.

Shall we accept this life, O best of nations?

For its awakening, its orator never slept heedless of it.

Can rest be sweet to us while our hearts

Are upon a firebrand, with hardships as their lot?

My God, do You call us to greatness through commands,

Yet whenever it calls us, we answer it by turning away?

And have mercy, O Lord! Can blindness to guidance afflict

A land with its hero and its wise man within it?

My loved ones, has the illusion of happiness not deceived you,

While the fire of Hell melts your livers?

And have your wounds baffled all the healers?

Then listen to my words, for I am their physician.

Come, and grace the land with schools,

So its gifted one may climb the paths to greatness.

    And do not deny a girl suckling at its breast;

For nothing in those abodes dishonors her.

She is a daughter of youthful days, and perhaps she

Will be a mother tomorrow, whose milk will be tasted.

She will bring forth men, enchanting the universe when she sees

That no one close to greatness has ever failed.

Like earth that shows us a flower, so we smell it,

Then the fragrance of the earth's flower enchants us.

She is the mother; it is enough to see her enfold us

With her dutiful care, while God rewards her on our behalf.

Then a nightingale sings above our heads,

And her nightingale sings our joys to us.

And we gather the sweetest-tasting of the fruits,

And her ripe dates and tender produce draw near to us.

Rise, then, toward the like of this, for

I see ignorance's ravages have begun to creep.
