لم أَكن الا لاحضان المحن
Calm your alarm, friend.
Your spirit settled, dawn broke
I was meant only for the arms of affliction.
I was made for only embracing hardship

لم يفارق مضجعي عند الوسن
Their figure, until morning,
I characterized it until morning
did not leave my bed when I grew drowsy.
It did not leave my bed at nightfall

How can relief be found
How can one find comfort?
by a heart that repose has stilled today?
A heart settled with comfort today

نبهت اقلامك الشعب وَلَن
How much you have endured, and how often
How much I endured, how much
your pens have warned the people—and never will...
Your pens awakened the people, never to forget

انتبه للوعظ وَالقول الحسن
How often you have spoken, yet I did not
How much I spoke, but no one listened
heed the admonition and the good words.
Pay heed to advice and good words

Thus calamity befell,
Thus the exemplary sermons
and time wronged whoever sought refuge in me.
To those who sought refuge in me from the tyranny of time

Whom do you call whenever
Whom do you call out to whenever
you shout or address a word—to whom?
You exclaim or direct words, but to whom?

Is it to a people who cast
Is it to a people who
themselves into death, but did not realize it?
Threw themselves into death, yet were unaware?

If this is so, what more
you are not Jesus; ease your burden, then.
Can you do, Jesus? Spare yourself

Indeed, all the people are in
If all the people are
death's throes, amid vanity and art.
Lost in death's intoxication, vainly buried

Their concern—woe is me!—
Concerned only with
is to live beneath the burdens of strife.
Living under the burdens of sedition

Leave them; he is the faithful one—
Leave them be, it is most right
their wine—so make the shroud now.
For their comfort, so make their shroud from now on
