The All-Merciful has established, with radiant good fortune,

an enduring reign that never ends,

for Abu al-Abbas, freely brought to him

by God's decree—to the chosen imam.

A reign for which all humankind hopes,

with none who hates it when it is mentioned.

The face of kingship had been blackened, but now it has

met the eye with a white face.

O God's trusted guardian, O you whose bounty,

if my fate stumbles with my fortune, lifts me up.

Overpowering longing and the loss of favor

have consigned my body to sickening grief.

    فَانْثَنَى عَنْهُ بِوَجْهٍ مُعْرِضِ

    Through you, my fortune had been approaching me;

then it turned away from that, its face averted.

Time loaned my youth a touch of gray

that I had not sought from any lender.

The gray steeds, when they race the

black steeds in desire's race, have no trainer.

My soul grieved for my closeness, which

had been my object of longing since the day of my striving.

A servant of yours, in your absence, has suffered what

consigned his body to a wasting sickness.

    لاَ يَرُدُّ النَّاسُ أَمْراً قَدْ قُضِي

    Separation was decreed for him against his will;

people cannot reverse a matter already decreed.

Each day a sword of harm is unsheathed

with lies told to you, by one who draws it.

He does not care, having seen my pain on your account,

whether Time is angry with him or pleased.
