تزيّنَ الناس يوم العيد للعيد

وقد لَبِستُ ثياب الزرقِ والسودِ

وقد لَبِستُ ثياب الزرقِ والسودِ

The people adorned themselves on the feast day for the feast.

While I had put on garments of blue and black.

أعددتُ نَوحاً وتعديداً وباكيةً

أعددتُ نَوحاً وتعديداً وباكيةً

ضِدّاً من الراح والرَيحان والعودِ

ضِدّاً من الراح والرَيحان والعودِ

I prepared wailing, lamentation, and a weeping woman,

In place of wine, sweet basil, and oud.

وأصبح الكلُّ مسرورا بعيدهِمُ

وأصبح الكلُّ مسرورا بعيدهِمُ

ورُحت فيكم إِلى نَوحٍ وتعديدِ

ورُحت فيكم إِلى نَوحٍ وتعديدِ

And everyone became happy with their feast.

And for you I turned to wailing and lamentation.

أصبحت في ترح والناسُ في فرح

أصبحت في ترح والناسُ في فرح

شتّان بيني وبين الناس في العيدِ

شتّان بيني وبين الناس في العيدِ

I awoke in sorrow, while the people were in joy.

How far apart we are, the people and I, on the feast day!
