And when I improvise a verse, my lord,

Then I see you grow restless at my improvisation.

And when I pinch poetry in its arena,

There is no doubt, my brother, that you split apart.

Indeed, when I utter an impromptu verse, I utter it

In haste, while your natural gift, beside mine, proceeds gently.

Why do I see you—though you are not my equal at it—

    Cloaking yourself with nonsense, seething?

Indeed, I complete verses on the spur of the moment, just as

You both see it; and when I speak, I am believed.

If you were a lion at improvisation, crouching in its lair,

You would find, poor wretch, that you are afraid of me.

And an impromptu verse I have uttered while drawing breath:

He did what I have said, you clumsy fool.
