And many a night whose sweetness I do not reveal to Time,

for fear that Time would take revenge on me for it.

    وليلٌ ولكن دون إشراقه الفجرُ

    Sleeplessness, yet every slumber falls short of it;

and a night, yet dawn falls short of its radiance.

And love’s intoxication—if it were matched in pleasure

by wine’s intoxication, intoxication would not have been forbidden.

And when she turned a pagan eye—

whose vow was the death of a man within my robe—

and swayed as though given her cheek’s wine to drink,

and how could wine sway one whose saliva is wine?

I envied my eye for her as she dwelt within it,

as the celestial spheres envy Fana-Khusraw’s sandal.
