    فإن أراجع فإنّي محصن زاني

    After you, I divorced praise of all people;

    And if I take it back, I am a married adulterer.

    And how can I praise them, when praise exposes them?

    Indeed, he who lets the offender loose is himself the offender.

    لكنه يشتهي مدحاً بمجَّان

    A people you see enraged when you recite to them;

    Yet he desires praise free of charge.

    Uthman knows that praise has a price,

    Yet he desires praise free of charge.

    And their anger at satire of others puzzled me,

    Yet the verse is aimed only at Uthman.

    وربمّا سبّ كشحانٌ بكشحان

    Not every beauty is Hind, as they claimed;

    And sometimes one cuckold is reviled through another.

    So every far-roaming verse will come to you from me,

    With a double weave of beauty and beneficence.

    Anyone whose ears it strikes one day will say:

    Hassan has appeared, extolling Ghassan.

    فاليوم يهدى إليها من خراسان

    Brocade used to be imported from Isfahan;

    But today it is sent there as a gift from Khurasan.

    I said, when it was said that Isma'il was being praised:

    His good fortune with people never slumbers.

    People are too shrewd to praise a man

    Until they see signs of generosity in him.
