The emir's house has become like what we have related

in accounts of the beauty of the gardens of Paradise.

Its walls rose so high that we surely said:

“The two Farqad stars will fall short of its height.”

The gaze roamed the expanse of a courtyard,

then turned back weary before reaching its limits.

    There you see flourishing gardens,

which the goblets of beautiful women resemble.

They beckon to morning wine without an eye,

and call for evening wine without a tongue.

As though the poppies opening within it,

above their green and supple leaves,

were the necks of enchanting beauties,

rising above tunics of Khosrauan pearlwork.

And the color of Nuʿman's anemones resembles

    rubies strung closely together.

And sometimes you liken them to cheeks

that wine has clothed in a crimson robe.

Yet we shall describe this one and that one

    by their likenesses—neither changes.

Both, in accuracy and exquisite wording,

are like pearls joined to pearls:

    anemones like brimming goblets,

    and poppies like empty bottles.

And when the wind flirted with them, we imagined

two battle-hosts among them, fighting one another.

Their banners became white and red,

tilted by horsemen for the clash of spears.

And stock flowers have blossoms you see

like the robes of singing girls you have seen.

You imagine smiling mouths within it

when the chrysanthemum blossom opens in a smile.

And its marigold they have likened,

with a comparison accurate in meaning,

to an agate cup with musk inside.

And this is the truth, confirmed by eloquence.
