رُ(completes “fate”) تَسَاوَىwere alike صَباحُهُits morning والمَساءُand the evening
Many a day Fate favored us with union with her;
Many a day her company has helped pass the time away,
its morning and evening were alike.
Its morning equaled the evening in pleasure for me.
سَاعَدَتْناfavored us ساعاتُهُits hours بِحَديثٍwith conversation
رَقَّgrew delicate حَتَّىso much that جَفاwas coarse لَدَيْهِbeside it الهَواءُthe air
Its hours favored us with conversation
Her conversation has beguiled many hours for us,
so delicate that the air seemed coarse beside it.
So refined that even the air around her seemed rarefied.
وَتَخَبّاand hid itself وَجْهُface الغَزَالةِthe sun عَنّاfrom us

And the sun's face hid itself from us,
The face of the lovely gazelle turned from us,
and over us lay a tent of clouds.
As clouds spread their canopy over us.
