It is dawn—it greeted us with a smile,

To banish from us the frown of darkness.

And it shone, making lawful the cup of wine—

Unmixed—and forbidding the cup of reproach.

We spent the day inhaling the roses of cheeks,

And the musk of throats, and the veil’s sweetmeats.

    We help the morning lift

The mask of darkness with the light of wine.
